Let's go back to December 2010: Walmart and its "Fighting Hunger Together" contest had taken over the local Internets. Throngs of us were obsessed with winning one million of Walmart's dollars to feed our hungry through a confusing Facebook contest that counted our "likes." We tried and tried, but came in second to Salt Lake City and got not a million, but $100,000.

This week, "Fighting Hunger Together" returned for year two. Fresno, once again, is in the running for a million dollars from Walmart and its crazy-clicking contest. Voting runs until April 30 and Fresno is sitting at No. 2 on the leaderboard, but rapidly moving up. It was much further back just a few days ago.

It seems like Walmart tried to clarify some of those confusing rules this time around -- you can vote once a day, for instance.

The question here: Are you playing another round of Walmart's game? I know a few folks whose reaction was "oh no, not again." Buuuuuut, it is a worthwhile cause in a city where one in four people might go hungry on any given day.

So what do you think? In? Out? Hungry for Walmart's dough? Had enough?

legrilledcheese.jpgApril is National Grilled Cheese Month (there's even an invitational), so let's discuss where to find the best grilled cheese sandwich in the Valley. Because, really, is there any better sandwich?

I've actually only come across one I think has the wow factor -- you know the kind of sandwich you dream about. It's the Dusty Buns Bistro's "Le Grilled Cheese" -- made with aged white cheddar and smoked bacon -- topping my list. I'm not the only one in LOVE with this gooey sandwich, there are raves and more raves out there.

Besides the Super Bowl and all those funny ads this Sunday, we're going to see some hot bodies. Let's call it the battle of the sexiest spokespeople. There's David Beckham in his undies for H&M and Adriana Lima in various states of dress for Kia and Teleflora. So who wins? Which bod do you think is off the charts?

UPDATE 1/10: From today's Bee: Stronger Valley air pollution alerts to be issued.

ORIGINAL ENTRY 1/9: I was walking along Huntington Boulevard at about 4:30 p.m. yesterday, enjoying a nice late-Sunday stroll on a lazy afternoon, when I noticed a house on the south side of the street -- very cute, very rustic, with a charming depiction of an owl hanging from the roof -- with smoke wafting out the chimney. A big pile of firewood was stacked on the front porch. It was nearly 60 degrees.

Really? On a no-burn day, in a week in which the stuff we breathe is choked with particulate matter? Are people really that clueless about how bad our air is this winter? On Dec. 29, Bee environment writer Mark Grossi wrote:

The Valley's haze has become a nasty brew of soot and debris twice the federal health standard. And it's getting worse. Nature and the economy have created a perfect storm of dirty air -- the worst December bout for the Fresno-Clovis area in more than a decade.

Some people say they have to use their fireplaces for economic reasons. If they don't burn, they can't stay warm, and that's a health issue, they say.

Not when it's warm to walk down the street in your shirt sleeves.

As seems to be depressingly the case in our hyper-polarized society, wood burning becomes a political act as well. As one fresnobee.com commenter declared:

I believe I have a right to burn a fire in my fireplace without an unreasonable search of my chimney. Just seems like government has grown too big.

What I want to know is this: How bad does our air have to get for clueless people to stop the burning? Right now, the fine for lighting wood fires is $50, waived on the first offense. Maybe it should be $5,000.

Madonna1.jpg

So the rumor du jour is that Madonna, the old Material Girl herself, is being tapped to perform during this year's Super Bowl XLVI halftime show. According to Entertainment Weekly, neither Madonna nor the NFL will confirm anything yet, but let's just pretend for a minute this is happening.

What I want to know is: Is Madonna the worst possible act you can think of to perform at a football game (other than the Black Eyed Peas -- that's just a given in every circumstance, not just sporting events)? True, the Super Bowl is the biggest football game of the year, and Madonna is nothing if not willing to sell herself in front of a large audience. But, come on. The woman has done everything in her power in recent years to downplay her American-ness, if you will. Take the fake British accent. And ... the fake British accent.

As much as her music and persona appeal to audiences across the country and indeed worldwide, Madonna has always put off a very above-it-all vibe -- definitely above America's favorite past-time something as seemingly lower class as football.

I mean, the woman loooooathes hydrangeas and those are simple but pretty flowers. Nachos, beer and penalty flags? I just don't see it.

What say you, peeps? 50-yard Line Madonna: Yay or nay?

Chris+Colfer+Cory+Monteith+Fox+Glee+Live+2010+uIeCwRo9ukgl-300x242.jpg

Entertainment Weekly reports today that at the end of "Glee's" upcoming third season, cast members Chris Colfer, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith will leave the show.

Creator Ryan Murphy says that characters Chris, Rachel and Finn will graduate from William McKinley High and head off into the real world, as high schoolers usually do.

It's a bold step. We've come to know and, well, maybe not love these characters, but the show has focused pretty heavily on these three characters in particular, and if Murphy's reasoning for their departure sticks, we can expect a second batch of characters -- pretty much everyone else -- to leave at the end of the fourth season (No Brittany? No way!).

So, I'm wondering: Will you continue to watch "Glee" knowing that the show will feature a rotating cast of characters? Or do you think, as I do, "Glee" should wrap it up for good with a nice, tidy ending this season?

Guacburger.jpg

One of the things I love about summer is grilling on my backyard BBQ. It's so relaxing and easy to grab a glass of wine, roll-up some corn-on-the-cob and toss on some chicken, pork chops, tri-tip or whatever sounds good.

Last night, I went the super-easy burger route. But I spiced it up a bit with some homemade guacamole, thick sliced locally grown tomatoes and leafy lettuce. With Fresno State corn on the side, it was one tasty meal.

Are there any other BBQ fans out there? What have you been grillin' up this summer? I'd love to hear about your backyard BBQ food adventures.

We're a week away from the Fourth of July. One of the staples of the Fourth, no doubt, is fireworks. So let's talk local firework displays.

Where do YOU go to watch firework displays on the Fourth? Who do you think puts on the best display?

Some of the more well-known and well-attended destinations include Freedom Fest at Buchanan High School and the Fresno Grizzlies game.

But there are many more out there. Most of the smaller cities around Fresno have their own fireworks displays. And, of course, people have their own Fourth of July traditions that make certain fireworks destinations a little more special.

So let's hear where you go for a good fireworks shows, why it's good and how long you've been going. We'll publish some of the responses in an upcoming issue of The Bee.

Has anyone watched this new "Footloose" trailer?

All I can think is it looks like an EXACT copy of the original other than some stepped-up dance moves. Why even bother doing it?

What say you, Beehivers? A good revival or just another tired remake?

popcorn-and-drink.jpg

Bee reader Don Slinkard doesn't think much of the "Pop Up Savings" experiment being conducted by Regal Entertainment Group at the UA Broadway Faire movie theaters. (Along with the regular admission cost, a $4 charge is added to every ticket to cover the cost of a refillable drink and popcorn. If you don't want to eat, you have to go to another theater.) Slinkard writes:

At Broadway Faire the other day, we were asked to pay $11 each for admission with all the greasy popcorn and sticky soda we could consume. We refused and went home.

Slinkard's Regal blues didn't end there. He continues:

This afternoon we went to Edwards to see "Midnight in Paris." Sorry, we were told, the theater is "being fixed; come back tomorrow." How's that for customer-friendly? "Pirates" is available on multiple screens in Fresno. Why not close one of those instead of "Midnight" which has one?
That attitude and lack of business sense is typical of Regal. Long ago it stopped running movie times. That annoyed me. Ever-rising costs, the endless ads and previews and the above experiences have turned into rage. Is there a way for a seriously unhappy customer to respond to that corporate monolith?

I'm going to dig around and try to get you a corporate contact, Don.

In the meantime, I'm interested in the whole Broadway Faire "experiment." (When the program was announced in May, Regal said the program will run through Sept. 8, when it will be evaluated.) What say you, Beehive readers? Have you experienced the theater's stuff-yourself plan? If so, did you end up drinking and eating yourself into a stupor? Is it a good deal?

What I didn't understand until Slinkard's email is that you don't have an option to forgo the empty calories. Either you pay to eat or you go elsewhere. For a nation very much concerned about battling obesity, that seems kind of tragic.

What do you think?
