Fresno State signed 14 high school players and one junior college player to national letters of intent on Wednesday, the first day of the signing period. But Coach Tim DeRuyter kept five available scholarships in reserve and said the Bulldogs' staff would continue recruiting.

''Under NCAA regulations we cannot go on the road recruiting. But we will continue to make contacts with high schools and junior colleges and do our due diligence to see if there's somebody out there that can still help us,'' DeRuyster said.

''When I talked to our staff, we didn't want to just sign 20 scholarships instead of 15. We didn't want to sign 20 just to fill roster spots. We intended to sign about this number so if a guy comes available late, if we find a guy as we go out in spring recruiting, which I've done at a number of other places, that we'd have scholarships available.''

Another avenue the Bulldogs might look to add a player or two is through transfers after spring football practices. Given the high coaching turnover in the Pac-12 this past season, there could be a glut of players looking for a new opportunity or don't fit the schemes of the new coaching staffs at schools that made a coaching change after the 2011 season.
