For Bulldogs, who is No. 2?

Without question, Kevin Olekaibe is the Fresno State Bulldogs' primary option at the offensive end and he has managed to shoot his way through some defenses designed to stop him. The sophomore guard is averaging 19.4 points per game and has taken 200 shots, which is 30.1 percent of the team total and more than double that of any other player.

That second scorer, though, still is a night-to-night proposition for the Bulldogs, who on Wednesday play at Arizona State before taking a needed break over the Christmas holiday.

Through 12 games Fresno State has had seven players finish games as its second leading scorer including Olekaibe on two occasions, and that doesn't point to much consistency considering Coach Rodney Terry is playing with an eight-man rotation.

Only twice has the same player been there in back-to-back games.

Most recently, it was guard Tyler Johnson, who had 11 and 13 points in losses at Colorado and at Oregon to back up a 26-point game from Olekaibe against the Buffaloes and a 20-point game from guard Jonathan Wills against the Ducks when Olekaibe went down with an ankle injury.

But forward Kevin Foster has been the second-leading scorer for the Bulldogs three times, Wills has been there and so have guards Garrett Johnson and Steven Shepp and forward Jerry Brown.

Terry said the Bulldogs do not necessarily need to have any one of them to play more assertively at the offensive end, but for the team to play with more consistency.

''I think consistent with execution,'' Terry said. ''When you do those things you put yourself in a position to where on the offensive end, it will take care of itself. If we continue to really guard guys and work at it and finish out possessions, at the offensive end we'll find a way to score. Guys will have opportunities to step up and make plays for us.''

With three more non-conference games before opening the Western Athletic Conference season on Jan. 5 at Utah State Terry continues to push combinations with a roster that includes only nine scholarship players, no true center and only three forwards, in trying to find the right mix.

In the loss at Boise State, the Bulldogs' coach had Tyler Johnson in the starting lineup, going with four perimeter players along with Brown at forward.

''Tyler has been good for us all year,'' Terry said. ''Tyler has given us a spark and he's a guy that lays it all out there on the line for us and I chose to put him in the lineup, going with the four-guard lineup, trying to get off to a better start in terms of tempo and how we wanted to play. I think he gave us good lift and I think Kevin Foster responded giving us a good lift off the bench.''

But it is worth noting that over the past 10 seasons every team that won the WAC Tournament championship had not only a solid secondary scorer, but a third player averaging 10 or more points per game. When Fresno State last won the WAC Tournament, in 2000, the Bulldogs had six players average 10 or more points a game led by Courtney Alexander at 25.3.

Terrance Roberson was second at 16.2 points per game, followed by Travis Robinson (14.3), Melvin Ely (13.3), Demetrius Porter (13.1) and Larry Abney (10.4).

Wills, one of only two seniors, is averaging 11.5 points per game. But the Bulldogs will need some consistency heading into conference play to generate more offense - Tyler Johnson has scored 11.2 points a game over the past four games to get his season average to 9.0, while the starting forwards Foster and Brown are at 7.8 and 7.3.
