Terry talks recruiting

Fresno State men's basketball coach Rodney Terry said his hiring on April 7, less than a week before the beginning of the signing period, will not hurt his recruitment of players for his first season in Fresno.

"I don't think that puts us at a disadvantage," he said. "We're going to have plenty of time to make decisions."

Even as players all over the country began signing their names away to schools on Wednesday?

"Guys will be flying off the board regardless," said Terry, pictured at right in a photo taken by The Bee's Craig Kohlruss. "There are no guarantees in recruiting that because I was here a week earlier you'll get a guy. I'm not going to say it's a negative. This time of year you have to really work for a guy anyway. If he's 6-7 or 6-8, everybody's trying to get that guy right now.

"You get your damage done in the fall period," Terry continued. "You get who you really want in the fall. In the spring, you evaluate what you need. In the fall, you better go get your best guys, who you really want. ...

"It's going to be a struggle regardless. This time of year recruiting is a bear no matter where you are."

Terry was back in Austin last night for the University of Texas' basketball banquet. He and new assistant coach Michael Schwartz (shown at left courtesy Univ. of Miami athletics) will have the opportunity to visit recruits in their homes until Wednesday.

Also here's a list of transfers. They won't help the Bulldogs for this season, but maybe someone off this list can help when the Dogs go to the Mountain West in 2012.
