Fresno State forward Paul George is as high as 16 on one mock draft site and I talked to an NBA scout today who said it wasn't strange to see George as high as the late teens. That's a positive for George, but in this uncertain science, it seems a new vairable has been introduced.
ESPNs Andy Katz (a former Bee writer ... yes, I'll take it there) reported via twitter today that one NBA team said they wouldn't do workouts from April 29-May 8. Early entry players who have not signed with an agent have until May 8 to decide whether they will stay in school or enter the Draft and cannot begin doing individual workouts with NBA teams until April 29. That team told katz that other NBA teams were likely to do the same and said a lot of players will stay in the draft and are "making poor decisions."
Yikes.
NBAdraft.net has George, the Bulldogs' leader in points, rebounds and steals last season, as the No. 16 pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Draftexpress.com still has George in the 20s -- No. 23 to the Atlanta Hawks. Only the NBA draft itself will decide who made a bad decision. If you're an early entry guy hoping to land in the first round and you land in the first round, boom. you're golden with a guaranteed contract. If you're shooting for that big, guaranteed check and you're the 31st pick overall instead of the 30th (the last pick of the first round), you, my friend made a bad move. At this point, it looks like George is leaving and isn't making a bda decision. I'm sure he and his family hope that he'll have the chance to do individual workouts to get a little more reassurance about where he'll be drafted.
Also of note: Former Memorial High star Quincy Pondexter is going No. 29 to the Grizzlies in one mock draft and is the No. 33 (second round) to the Kings in the other. Pondexter just wrapped up his senior year at Washington with a trip to the NCAA Tournament and a game-winning bucket in one game.
NBAdraft.net seems to be high on the Nevada guys. They have G Armon Johnson as the No. 26 pick to the Grizz and F Luke Babbitt as the No. 30 pick to the Wizards.
