By leading 64-21 with 9:05 to play Monday night, the Aggies had tripled the Bulldogs score. But with five Utah State bench players in over the next few minutes, the Bulldogs went on a 10-0 run, cutting the lead to 33. ... (smh, if you're into new age abbreviations)
So with 5:43 remaining in Utah State's crushing defeat of Fresno State in Logan, Aggies coach Stew Morrill placed all five of his starters back in the game. That's something that didn't jive well with Fresno State coach Steve Cleveland.
"Utah State played great. There's no question that they absolutely dominated in every aspect of the game," Cleveland said. "One of the real disappointments to me -- especially considering the history Stew and I have competing against each other and the great rivalry we have -- he was playing his second group which I appreciated. But to reinsert the starters when you're up 33 with 5:43 to go was something I just don't understand."
The starters played for a few minutes before the reserves were placed back in.
A quote from Morrill in this morning's Herald Journal seemed to have Morrill say it was more of a coaching opportunity for his reserves than anything personal against Fresno State or its staff.
"In fairness to those kids [the Utah State reserves], they haven't played very much for a long time," Morrill said. "I apologized a little for getting so upset. I have to expect them to go out and play and compete. I checked them back in and they did better."
