In a conference call with reporters today, Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott (pictured) said the Pac-10 is looking into expansion and the window to do so would be in the next year as the conference TV deal expires in 2012.
So with the Pac-10 looking to expand, a number of theories are coming out about who will join. One viewpoint I found has nixed Fresno State and Boise State as possibilities.
Seattle Times writer Bob Condotta wrote in his blog:
"But [Scott] also said there is no pressure to expand just because others are, and he said that the requirements for schools that would enter the conference haven't changed, saying again that any new entry would have to be the proper fit 'academically and culturally'' --- which means, I think you can say safely, no Boise State or BYU or California state school (none of which fit either as research institutions or having the total academic and athletic package. Also, TV market will be important, and not just what a school would add but having it be more than what it would also take away as the percentage of the pie for all schools shrinks with every school that is added).
"Scott said no schools have been approached about their interest in possibly joining the Pac-10 and said the entire process is in a 'very premilinary'' stage of information gathering."
ABC4 in Utah had a murky report about Utah being invited to join the Pac-10. "This is all speculation...but sources are telling ABC 4 Sports that Utah will be invited to join the PAC 10 conference, but not BYU."
So sources are speculating that Utah will get an invite. ... Here's what else ABC 4's Wesley Ruff had to say:
"BYU would not be invited, primarily because they don't play on Sunday...and the PAC 10 has a lot of Sunday games. Officially, the PAC 10 would say Utah is a better fit, because it's a research institution and has a medical school, like most of the other PAC 10 schools...and BYU does not."
ESPNs Mark Schlabach predicted in January that the MWC would lose schools to the Pac-10 and Big 12 and end up adding Fresno State, Hawaii or Nevada.
What do I think? I don't think Fresno State will be invited to the Pac-10, but if the MWC loses Utah, BYU and TCU to the Pac-10 and Big 12, I think the MWC could come calling. Question is, after the MWC loses those teams, is it worth it for Fresno State to leave the WAC?

I personally don't think BYU would be invited to the PAC-10 due to it not playing on Sunday which is a huge issue. I see Utah being added but not sure what other school. I don't see the PAC-10 as adding only one school.
If the PAC-10 takes the second school from other the the MWC, I see Boise State possibly moving to the MWC and that leaves Fresno State in the WAC.
It would be a miracle and a complete suprise for the PAC-10 to take Fresno State because it doesn't have the academic quality (even though it's ag, engineering, nursing and business schools are fantastic). What Fresno State does have is the athletic quality to compete but is limited since it no longer has wrestling, men's swimming and men's water polo.
My guess is that if the PAC-10 doesn't miraculously select Fresno State, it will be perpetually stuck in the WAC for the forseable future.
The only way Fresno State moves to the MWC is if the PAC-10 and the Big 12 take three teams combined from the MWC and I agree with you that at that time, Fresno State may want to stay in the WAC unless of course Boise State and Nevada or Hawaii moves to the MWC then Fresno State would want to be the third team.
No it wont, i doubt, it. Reading up on the web, Boise will not be added nor fresno state because we are not considered research institute. Utah is the only one they mention. Big 10 may take Boise and TCU or both so, Fresno may have to move to MWC. Who knows, its all about money anyways.
I think it would be a great addition if Fresno is given the chance to join the pac10....reason why is Fresno programs are proven winners...and city of Fresno has the facilities to provide environment...it would be awesome to see Fresno State join the pac....Football teams has the mentality of anybody any time...as long as they play good teams they will bring it every game...go bulldogs..
I would believe that Fresno St. is a better place and Boise st. to join the PAC 10 and then Utah or any other School out have Utah as not had a better season's then Boise and Fresno st in the last few years.. Fresno is the only school the four states that provide a AG research and facilities that help do Green research.. and there in the Heart have the California Valley. As everyone knows Fresno ST. plays anyone at any time as the school code.. and by adding Boise ST the gain a rival game within the PAC 10. and Boise and Fresno as proven the can play against PAC TEN schools and in other Conferences. So if that's not enough to convince the PAC 10 i don't know what they are thinking..
People seem to forget that Dan Brown had created the Academic Gameplan, which has been used across the nation to boost academics in football and other sports.
Another great reason for Fresno ST. to join the PAC is due to far better facilities then almost all other PAC-10 schools. From the Save Mart Center, Beiden Field, Bulldog Diamond. They are bigger and better. Ex. are The Colisium and The Rose Bowl, neither owned by the schools that use them.
Fresno is centrally located and the airport has flights directly to most PAC-10 schools. Fresno St. regularly plays many PAC schools in all sports.
Many of the PAC schools were not at the current level they are now. They have gained success due to their affiliation.
Fresno is by far the bet suited for the PAC-10, just need to look a bit deeper than football win-losses. A few years in the Pac and they would be mid to upper level in a few years.
