First-round playoff slants and rants

This is easy to say after the fact, but Redwood, at No. 10, was underseeded in Division II. The Rangers hammered No. 7 Hoover 28-0 in Fresno. The seeding was a slap to the West Yosemite League, where Redwood placed second at 5-1. Hoover tied for fourth in the County/Metro Athletic Conference at 2-3. But here's the key: Redwood's five losses this season have come to teams with a combined 43-9 record -- Buchanan (10-0), Tulare (10-0), El Diamante (9-1), Centennial (7-4) and Atascadero (7-4). The Rangers will play at No. 2 El Diamante Friday.

** No. 8 Sanger rolls up No. 9 West 20-3, setting up a D-II challenge at No. 1 Tulare. The burning question: Are there two outs in the ninth for Apaches coach Chuck Shidan? He's in his 20th year, and he could go another 20. He's untouchable. This is his call, and I suspect he's going to call it quits -- a huge loss for Sanger, the community and all of us in the Valley associated with high school football.

** No. 4 Memorial was overpowering against No. 13 Mt. Whitney in the 47-7 D-II scrimmage. What a quarterfinal final beauty at home against No. 5 Edison.

** No. 4 Memorial was overpowering against No. 13 Mt. Whitney in the 47-7 D-II scrimmage. What a quarterfinal final beauty at home against No. 5 Edison.

** No. 9 Clovis North's 37-6 road rout of No. 8 Chavez in D-III was expected. There's no one in the division that remotely compares with the competition the Broncos have already played (Central, Bullard, Edison, etc.). Clovis North, which visits No. 1 Dinuba in the quarters, could win it all. But 1,200-yard, 18-TD running back Alec Mechikoff had
better play, and that's questionable. He missed the second half at Chavez with a stomach illness, and it appears to be serious.

** No. 8 Kerman rallies past No. 9 Roosevelt 24-20 in D-IV. Lions coach Marty Martin will design a solid defensive plan for No. 1 Kingsburg and QB Tyler Bray next Friday, but it won't be enough. Dude is going to Tennessee, you know..

** No. 6 Dos Palos, which spanked No. 11 CVC 35-14, will give No. 3 Taft heck on the road in D-IV.
