Bulldogs headed to Hawaii Bowl?

Fresno State could be headed to the Hawaii Bowl to meet a familiar foe: June Jones.

Hawaii's football team, which has an automatic bid to the Hawaii Bowl when it is bowl eligible, likely will not be bowl eligible this season. That opens the door for other WAC teams like the Bulldogs.

The Hawaii Bowl pits the WAC versus Conference USA, which former Hawaii coach June Jone now belongs to as Southern Methodist's coach.

According to Ferd Lewis' article in the Honolulu Advertiser, ESPN Regional Television (which owns and operates the game) would like to bring Jones back to Hawaii to face the Warriors. But if the Warriors don't make it, what about the Bulldogs facing their old WAC foe?

Another possible matchup in the Hawaii Bowl would be Boise State vs. Houston (Conf. USA), though the Liberty Bowl has first rights to the Conf. USA champ, which Houston could be this season.

WAC Commissioner Karl Benson said the Poinsettia Bowl GMAC Bowl also could be possibilities for the WAC this season. He said the WAC has back-up agreements with those bowls should the PAC-10 (P-Bowl) or ACC (GMAC) not have enough bowl eligible teams.

It's still unclear whether the PAC-10 will be able to fill all of its bowl slots because more than one team may go to a BCS game. The ACC, though, won't fill al of its slots and teh GMAC Bowl features the No. 9 ACC team against a MAC team. That means the WAC should be able to fill in there and will have four of its bowl-eligible WAC teams (Fresno State, Boise State, Idaho and Nevada) heading to a bowl this season.
