Last week, we told you the San Francisco Giants' new Double-A affiliate, based in Richmond, Va., was in search of a nickname.
Well, Rocky and Bullwinkle would be proud!
Six finalists were chosen and the results are in. Introducing the Richmond Flying Squirrels!
Yes, Flying Squirrels.
About 5,000 people voted on-line for the team's new name. The other finalists were Flatheads, Rock Hoppers, Rhinos and Hush Puppies. (Another finalist, Hambones, was removed from consideration after the local NAACP chapter found it offensive. Apparently, "hambone" is the name of a slave dance.)
The Richmond Flying Squirrels are replacing the Connecticut Defenders in the Eastern League. Can't wait to ask players joining the Fresno Grizzlies next season from Double-A what they think.
