Never, even in a rocky season, had I even considered that Clovis West interim football coach Coby Lindsey wouldn't be given the permanent position next year until I left Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night following the Golden Eagles' 24-3 freefall against Central.
CW (2-4) executed so poorly and was so outplayed on homecoming, it was actually booed by its fans, which I hadn't heard before. For an interim coach with dreams of sticking for 20 or so years, this was the proverbial worst nightmare.
Still, it's far too early to make a call on the son of Dennis Lindsey, Clovis Unified's former longtime athletic director.
It's not a reach to say the Eagles could repeat their section D-I championship.
Much of the bad that has evolved for CW this year has been out of Lindsey's control, notably the two-week suspensions of eight prominent players for disciplinary reasons, and injuries to quarterback Ian Hall and cornerback/receiver Gerald Nutt.
Also, the Eagles' losses have come to state- and section-ranked teams (Servite-Anaheim, Centennial-Corona, Bullard, Edison) with a combined 20-4 record.
Given all those factors, Lindsey should be given a long rope. But that could shorten come November.

We all know how CW does things. The coach will be lucky to finish the season. They fire coaches for losing in the championship. Who wants to coach for them (the supposed premiere program)?
It's hard to dispute your point, Justin.
The question: Are they really going to flush the son of Dennis Lindsey? And I ask this knowing Coby will remain as an assistant if he isn't retained as the head guy.
They got rid of a coach that won 40 consecutive games (Blankenship). What else can you do? Walk on water (and not get wet)?
Nothing is good enough for CW. They take football too serious. They have lost the confidence of the players because there is so much turnover.
No coach for CW has EVER been fired for losing the Championship. Marty martin was NEVER fired. His contract as head football coach wasnt resigned. There is a difference.
Let's not play with semantics and even begin to fool ourselves here.
Did Marty Marty have every intention of returning as Clovis West's coach in 2008? Yes.
Therefore, was he fired? No question.
Marty Martin had no intention of coaching one season at CW. He was forced out/contract was not renewed/whatever you want to call it.
He's on the growing and long list of many coaches being dismissed at CW for not meeting an unattainable standard. Who wants to coach for a program like that? Football is not that serious! Only losing and being unable to fill the coaching position will make CW administration see the proverbial light.
Based on the expectations of that team, Martin could have won the Valley title and still been fired.
They had a star QB (Sweeney) and RB (Jelmini) and everyone was drinking the "state title kool-aid". CW is a good program and doesn't need a state title to validate itself as a premiere program in the state. They've had big wins and great teams over the years.
The sad part is that they've made short term decisions in firing these coaches that will have long term implications.
Great call on the "kool-aid" consumption. But was it cherry, grape or orange?
It was definitely Driller, Bullard, Buchannon, and Timberwolf Blue laced with a slight tinge of Edison Black.
Well I know for a fact that Coach Martin had every intention of returning to CW for many more years of coaching. But the reason for his departure has NOTHING to do with not winning the Valley Title that year. It goes beyond that and into budget spending and other topics that very few people know about.
