Ryan Mathews: "I'm up there with the best of them"

Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews is ranked second in the nation with 148 rushing yards per game this season. Everyone who has seen him play knew it was only a matter of time before he caught the nation's attention with such statistics.

Mathews' main issue has been remaining healthy, something he's managed to do this season. He's taken advantage of his health by dazzling defenders and spectators alike. He even has Bee columnist Matt James calling for the Heisman.

In a recent interview with Sporting News, he stopped short of calling himself the nation's best back, but says he's among the best.

Said Mathews: "I wouldn't say [I'm] the best back. There are a lot of outstanding backs, and we all have different running styles. I'd say I'm up there with the best of them, but I wouldn't say I'm the best. If you'd ask a running back at USC, they'd say they're the best. I think I belong right up there."
