Postgame thoughts on Clovis West-Edison

Clovis West High's Brady Seibert said the turning point in the Golden Eagles 28-14 come-from-behind victory over Edison was John Winston's 16-yard interception return for a touchdown with 6:52 remaining in the third quarter.

But says here the turning point actually came a few minutes earlier.

Edison, which took a 14-0 lead with 20 seconds left in the first half on Max Schuh's 14-yard touchdown pass to Deontay Greenberry, got the ball to open the second half and marched deep into Clovis West territory. But on a fourth-and-2 play from the Golden Eagles' 6-yard line, the snap to Schuh, who was in the shotgun, was off the mark and pounced on quickly by Clovis West.

Had the Tigers gone up 21-0 at that point, Clovis West would have been hard-pressed to come back. Not that it couldn't have been done, but the challenge would have been steep.

The Eagles didn't do anything with their ensuing possession, but a punt pinned Edison deep in its own territory and set up Winston's short interception return.

From there, it was like someone lit a fuse under the defending Central Section Division I champions.

Connon Buss, who was ineffective a week earlier against Bullard, delivered a perfect throw on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Randon Garcia that tied the game. He would later score the clinching touchdown on a nifty option where he faked a pitch to Seibert and raced untouched 19 yards.

You often here people recycle the cliché "refuse to lose" in sports. Friday night, that's exactly what the Eagles did once they realized they were dangerously close to falling to 1-4 on the season.

It will be a whole lot easier for Clovis West to open Tri-River Athletic Conference play next week against Central coming off a dramatic come-from-behind win, rather than riding a four-game losing streak.
