With defensive lineman Rykeem Yates making tackles sideline-to-sideline, Tevin McDonald blowing up plays in the backfield and Louis Ireland intercepting a pass, Edison High's defense has stifled Clovis West during the first half of their nonleague game at Chukchansi Park.
Max Schuh has thrown a pair of touchdown passes and a two-point conversion to give the fourth-ranked Tigers a 14-0 lead over the No. 5 Golden Eagles at halftime.
Clovis West received a 58-yard kickoff return by Kendall Brock to open the game, but failed to capitalize on the good field position, one of three trips into Edison territory that saw the Golden Eagles come away empty handed.
The Tigers, led by Yates, have totally bottled up Brock, who's rushed for 25 yards on 12 carries. Brock's backfield mate, Braden Seibert has been a little more successful, rushing for 44 yards on eight carries, but the Eagles passing game is sputtering again as Connor Buss has completed 4 of 9 passes for 40 yards with the one interception.
With Schuh passing for 148 yards, including scores of 6 yards to McDonald and 14 yards to Deontay Greenberry, and D.J. Scott rushing for 57 yards on six carries, the Tigers have moved the ball well. But Clovis West has kept it close thanks to interceptions from James Bitter and Tevin Villalba, each coming in Eagles territory.
Edison gets the ball to open the second half. A touchdown drive on its first possession would put Clovis West in a considerable hole against a defense that is flying to the ball and making plays in the backfield.
