Clovis West-Edison pregame thoughts

We've got a real interesting night of football on tap here at Chukchansi Park as fourth-ranked Edison High prepares to host No. 5 Clovis West in the last nonleague game for both.

And both teams really need this win tonight.

Edison is coming off its first loss of the season -- 22-12 against top-ranked Buchanan -- and still has a Nov. 6 date looming against No. 2 Bullard. The Tigers would be hard-pressed to end up with a high seed -- and home playoff games -- in the postseason for Division II with two or even three losses, even if they came against D-I teams. Remember, the Tigers, a team that had section title hopes last season, went on the road and were eliminated. There's no doubt Edison would like to remain in Fresno for the postseason this year.

Defending Central Section D-I champion Clovis West could be 1-4 when this night ends. And that's typically not acceptable in Golden Eagle land, even if two of the losses came to Southern California powers Servite-Anaheim and Centennial-Corona. A loss tonight would likely make Clovis West have to run the table in the mighty Tri-River Athletic Conference to have any hope of avoiding a trip to Bakersfield come playoff time.

I've seen both of these teams once before and I see a defensive battle brewing tonight.

Edison has playmakers on offense in RB D.J. Scott, WRs Tevin McDonald and Deontay Greenbery and QB Max Schuh. But despite that talent, the Tigers haven't shown the same offensive explosiveness as teams like Buchanan and Bullard. Edison's offense is really aided by its defense, which causes a lot of havoc with physical defensive linemen Rykeem Yates and Wesley Flowers.

Clovis West, on the other hand, has explosive RBs in Kendall Brock and Braden Seibert, but unresolved issues at quarterback left the Golden Eagles one-dimensional last week in a loss to Bullard. John Kortoff, a standout baseball player who was a late addition in football, started but was lifted in the first-half in favor of Connor Buss. Neither looked particularly sharp.

So I see this shaking out as a low-scoring affair.
