A day at the races

Big Fresno Fair horse racing ends its 10-day run today and there's still time to come out and watch the winningest jockey in thoroughbred history.

Russell Baze is riding in six races this afternoon, starting in the sixth race about 2:35 p.m. or so. Baze is to horse racing what Cy Young was to baseball when it comes to winning.

There was a shocker in the first race, the AMRA Gold Cup for mulies. Bar JF Hot Ticket, which had won 33 of 39 starts, was upset by her little sister, Bar JF Red Ticket. Hot Ticket broke last out of the gate and wound up second to Red Ticket, which handed her big sister the first loss after 22 consecutive victories.

The next race disaster struck in the Quarter Horse Futurity. Jesus Arriaga, the top mixed breed jockey, injured his leg and was taken to a hospital after his horse, Claim Jumpn, acted up in the gate before the race. The horse was scratch.

When the race started, inside horse La Ojitos broke sharp left into the rail and jockey Sergio Ruiz was catapulted onto the infield grass. Ruiz was shaken but not hurt.
