** Bullard's 48-14 win over Clovis was the Knights' first of four consecutive nonleague games against Clovis Unified schools. Unfortunately, the only Clovis Unified school they're not playing is No. 1 Buchanan. Section D-I championship, maybe?

** No. 3 Bakersfield, which will visit Buchanan Friday, showed both vulnerability and will in defeating No. 8 Stockdale 32-31 after trailing 31-20 with 7:17 remaining.

** Clovis West's opponent next Friday, the state's No. 6 Centennial-Corona, lost 31-13 at unranked Mater Dei-Santa Ana last night. Centennial had gone 29-2 in three seasons, including a 15-0 mark last year, when it was named Cal-Hi Sports State Team of the Year.

** Edison has three two-way players -- linemen Rykeem Yates and Wesley Flowers, and running back/safety Tevin McDonald -- who rarely come out of the game and rank among the top 10 players in the section. Flowers and McDonald have comitted to UCLA, and Yates will have plenty of options, depending on academic eligibility.

** We applauded Sunnyside for its last-minute 22-21 season-opening win at Torrey Pines-San Diego two weeks ago. But it's made me wonder more about Torrey Pines after Sunnyside's subsequent losses to Sanger (31-14) and Reedley (13-10). So I looked: Torrey Pines is 0-3 and has scored 15 points in two additional losses since.
