Kendricks making a splash

Sophomore linebacker Mychal Kendricks out of Hoover High has stepped into the Cal starting lineup just fine, thank you.

Kendricks has led Cal in tackles both games (home victories over Maryland and Eastern Washington) and has 14 in two games.

Last week, he returned a fumble 45 yards before he was run down by Eastern Washington running back Taiwan Jones at the 5-yard line.

"I caught myself looking at the big screen as I was running," Kendricks told the Contra Costa Times. "That could have messed me up. I should have had that touchdown."

Now the eighth-ranked Bears head on the road for the first time, traveling to play Minnesota on Saturday. The Gophers are 2-0, including last week's 20-13 victory over Air Force in the first game in Minnesota's new 50,000-seat, open-air stadium on the university's Minneapolis campus. It replaces the Metrodome as the Gophers' home.

The game will be televised on ESPN, giving Cal's linebackers -- Kendricks, Eddie Young, D.J. Holt and Mike Mohamed -- a chance to show off the speed that has become their hallmark.
