Grizzlies losing some winners

The blood-letting has begun for the Fresno Grizzlies with the major-league September call-ups.
Say good-bye to pitcher Waldis Joaquin, outfielder John Bowker and first baseman Jesus Guzman (pictured raising his armsSPT_DLW_GRIZZLIES_3.JPG). Also to outfielder Andres Torres.
That leaves the Grizz without the PCL's leading hitter (Bowker), possibly their best reliever (Joaquin) and one of their most consistent on-base men (Guzman).
The Giants certainly could use Bowker's and Guzman's hitting and another decent reliever would help a bullpen that keeps breaking down.

Fresno, once 11 games over .500 not so long ago, might be in danger of finishing with a losing record. The team has seven games left and has lost three straight and eight of the past 10.

The Grizzlies also are in danger of dropping into last place. They're in third now, three games ahead of Las Vegas, and the teams meet three more times.

San Francisco did send the Grizz help, but it's untested Triple-A help. Joining the team from Double-A Connecticut will be infielder David Maroul (.218, 5 homers, 19 RBIs; and

right-handed pitcher Mike Musgrave (3-0, 5.76 ERA)
Musgrave was San Francisco's seventh-round draft choice in 2002 and Maroul a 23rd rounder in 2005.
