While checking out a story on the Bulldogs in an Idaho paper, I got stuck on this understated lead sentence:
"The Fresno State Bulldogs still resemble a Pat Hill-coached squad -- for the most part."
I don't know about you, but after two games, I don't think this Bulldogs offense resembles a traditional Pat Hill offense at all.
Co-offensive coordinator Jeff Grady (in photo, with QB Ryan Colburn) appears eager to make his mark. And that's good to see, especially considering he essentially has been learning straight from Hill for almost a decade now (as a player, grad assistant, assistant coach).
Grady is using the diversity of his stable of four running backs (Ryan Mathews, Lonyae Miller, Robbie Rouse and Anthony Harding) and four receivers (Seyi Ajirotutu, Devon Wylie, Marlon Moore and Chastin West) to keep the chains moving. Grady has even had Colburn pass deep over the top with Jim Sweeney-style passes in both games and, of course, he's called a handful of wildcat plays with Ebahn Feathers.
In fact, while Grady's play-calling has me excited -- even got me to jump out off the couch with that double-reverse option pass last week at Wisconsin -- I thought some more conservative tactics in the second half against the Badgers could have made the difference. Especially after Ryan Mathews ripped the defense on his 55-yard run midway through the third quarter. Check out the play-by-play recap.
I think Pat Hill of yesteryear would have pounded the ball incessantly in that situation (leading in the second half on the road) and I was pretty surprised that Grady went to the pass again and again, especially after the two interceptions in regulation. And to think of what some more Ebahn in the second half could have led to ...
But that was so last week, and the Broncos are so this week. And it certainly wouldn't be understated to say the Bulldogs are going to need all those offensive pieces working Friday night.

LET FEATHERS FLY!!!
The Boise State Broncos are to beat you down AGAIN, just like last year. However, you guys should have won the game against Wisconsin. The only problem I saw was that the Dogs have got to learn how to close out the games like that.
