Law grants opportunities to minority coaches

With coaching changes at Fresno State a possibility in the near future, a new Oregon law raises some interesting interview requirements officials here might want to consider.

Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski signed a bill Wednesday that would require the state's universities to interview a minority before hiring a head coach or athletic director.

Some attention has been given to this topic in recent years because of the vast disparity between black head football coaches and white coaches despite the large amount of black football players in the FBS. Black players make up 47.5% of FBS football players but less than 7.6% of the FBS football coaches are black. Conversely, 45.1% of FBS players are white and 92.4% of FBS head coaches are white.

According to the NCAA, of the current 119 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision head football coaches, seven are African-American, one is Pacific Islander, and one is Latino. Out of a total of 582 football programs in Divisions I, II and III, only 3.9 percent are coaches of color, excluding the historically black coaches and universities.
