For those who attended Thursday's baseball game at Beiden Field, they might have noticed that all-star third baseman Tommy Mendonca spent an inning at first base while all-star first baseman Alan Ahmady swapped corners and went to third.
How did it fair? Ahmady had two assists, stopping a bouncer and rifling a throw to Mendonca for an out, then making a backhanded stop and rifling a throw again to Mendonca for another out.
You would have thought Mendonca, who maybe the nation's best defensive third baseman, was still at the hot corner.
But just when it seemed like Fresno State was going to spend the rest of the night using this experiment, Mendonca and Ahmady switched back to their regular positions the next inning.
I asked Bulldogs coach Mike Batesole what was the deal with that and he said: "Tommy needed a break." Break... but for what, 10 minutes, for one inning? That's not exactly a long period to rest.
And Batesole's response was: "He needed a break. Then he didn't need a break and it was over so we put him back to third."
Kinda funny. Kinda weird. But whatever, it worked and it's all very interesting. Perhaps Ahmady is the primary backup to Mendonca. And Ahmady moving to third would allow the big bat of Jake Johnson to get in the lineup at first base.
Also remember that these guys played more than 80 games last year during the college baseball season. Then, Mendonca played in about 25 games when he was with the college USA team in Europe. Add all of the practices in between, and the pregame warmups, and maybe all those great plays Mendonca has made is slightly starting to take its toll.
