SP___SOCCER_SECTION_YOUNG_6.JPGThe Harold S. Young Tournament is always a highlight to the first weekend of Valley high school boys soccer.

This year is the 35th anniversary edition of the tournament named after the Valley soccer pioneer. Tournament director Darren Holden says a special presentation will be made to the Young family at Tice Park during intermission of Saturday's Premier division championship game.

Harold S. Young died in 2002.

Soccer was largely considered a foreign sport in the United States when Young emigrated to Fresno from Warwickshire, England, in 1957. Supported by Fresno Parks and Recreation, he organized schools, recruited volunteers and conducted coaching clinics.

He was instrumental in convincing the California Interscholastic Federation to recognize soccer as a high school sport. In 1973, the national publication "Soccer" cited Fresno for having the best youth program in the United States and praised Mr. Young for his enthusiastic leadership.

Thirty-two teams are split into eight pools today at Fresno Regional Sports Park on Jensen Avenue 2.5 miles west of Highway 41. They're using eight fields; games started at 8:30 a.m. (brrr!) and are scheduled to run through about 5 p.m.

Most of the action Saturday is at Regional, but the Gold (3:30 p.m.) and Premier (5:30 p.m.) finals are at Tice Park (across Millbrook Avenue from Clovis West High).

Here are the pools:

Pool A: El Toro-Lake Forest, Hanford West, Sanger, Tulare Western.

Pool B: Buchanan, Madera, Reedley, San Marcos-Santa Barbara.

Pool C: Clovis, Delano, Farmersville, Hoover.

Pool D: Avenal, Clovis East, McLane, Mt. Whitney.

Pool E: Caruthers, Clovis West, Porterville, Sunnyside.

Pool F: Capistrano Valley, Edison, Firebaugh, Roosevelt.

Pool G: Bullard, Golden West, Madera South, Washington.

Pool H: Central, Fresno, Hanford, University.
