Tradition killed in Chowchilla

Jeff Davis reports:

Nothing like messing with a team's tradition before the big game.

Chowchilla football players usually are escorted onto the field by motorcycle riders, only that was prohibited tonight because it's under Central Section control and apparently not allowed.

The motorcycles form a tunnel and rev their engines as the players run through to midfield to begin warmups.

This time, senior Rechie Palafox led the Redskins on the track in front of the grandstands carrying the "Sledgehammer," a symbol for smash-mouth football, before they turned left and onto the field.

Kingsburg brought four busloads of fans who are crammed into the west stands and auxiliary bleachers on both ends.

The bands for both schools already are locked in a back-and-forth battle.

Prediction: If the Chowchilla Redskins are anything like the $5 tri-tip sandwiches sold here, then they'll be winners. They pack enough meat and grilled onions and peppers on the bun to feed a family of four.
