As the excitement builds for tonight's final four Central Section championship games, we hate to throw a wet blanket ...
But chances are slim that any Valley teams will be headed to Carson for next week's five state bowl games.
Read on to find out which schools have the best shot and to see this week's Cal-Hi rankings.
Mark Tennis at Cal-Hi Sports is the go-to source in California for comparing teams from different regions.
His peg for the Central Section's best hopes are in Division III, where the Nos. 4-5-6 teams in this week's South rankings are Bakersfield Christian, Corcoran and Chowchilla.
(You might ask, "Where's Kingsburg?" Kingsburg needed 53 students to go somewhere else, because the high end for D-III enrollment in the South is 1,100 students.)
Standing above the Central Section teams in D-III South are No. 1 St. Bonaventure-Ventura (a heavy favorite in tonight's Southern Section Northern Division final against Moorpark), and the teams playing in tonight's Northwest Division final: No. 2 Oaks Christian-Westlake Village vs. No. 3 Serra-Gardena.
Conclusion: A Southern Section team is going to claim that bowl berth.
And in D-II South, the result of an early championship game today has likely sunk any hopes that Tulare and El Diamante had.
Niether No. 8 Tulare nor No. 15 El Diamante stood high in the South rankings.
But only section champions can advance to bowl games -- and only three eligible teams stood above Tulare, giving at least the Redskins some hope this morning.
But this afternoon at Qualcomm Stadium, No. 1 Cathedral Catholic-San Diego pounded Valhalla-El Cajon 49-13 in the San Diego Section D-III final.
No. 2 Oceanside, a four-time defending section champion, kicks off against No. 10 Helix-La Mesa at 4:30 p.m. in its San Diego Section D-II final.
In other divisions, No. 10 Clovis West is the highest-ranking Central Section team in D-I South, and bowl-ineligible Central Valley Christian, at No. 3, is the section's only ranked team in Small Schools South.
