With Fresno State reaching the midpoint of its season and at 4-2, it's only fitting to hand out mid-semester grades so the Bulldogs know how much more they have to go to an A this season.

Because they're not rocking any A right now.

Position breakdown.

Quarterback - Good ole Tommy Brandstater, the heart of this Bulldogs team. Except Tommy Boy hasn't be that good this season. Sure, he's had his moments of being very efficient. But Brandstater still has not shown his MVP form from the Humanitarian Bowl of last season. Granted, it takes a lot of parts for a quarterback to look good. But as a three-year starter, Brandstater still hasn't show just "how to make plays." It's as if everything has to be perfect for Brandstater to be effective - the routes, the blocking, the coverage, the throw, the catch. Brandstater really hasn't shown how to make something out of nothing like good quarterbacks throughout the country do. And this guy was or is supposed to be drafted around the third round of the upcoming NFL Draft?!?

Ugh... not if he plays continues. At midseason, Brandstater has completed 95 of 156 passes for 206.2 yards per game and 10 touchdowns. He has five interceptions (can't remember how many of those were batted at the line, but it has been a lot).

QUARTERBACK midseason grade: (-C)

What has to be done to improve grade? Brandstater has to start taking greater command of the offense. He still hasn't thrown for over 300 yards, which he's only done twice. Of course, the Bulldogs ground game has been doing well the past two games. But for Brandstater to get an A, he'll have to shine from here out. I'm talking converted long bombs, quick slants, rollout connections and stop the turnovers. If Brandstater does that, maybe, just maybe, Fresno State can still win a Western Athletic Conference title. But again, that's a Big If and an even bigger MAYBE!
