Fantasy draft success can take a while to figure out. Such was the case with Bee sports reporter George Hostetter way back in the 1980s.
Hostetter writes:
I couldn't believe my good luck back in 1987. It was my first year of fantasy football and I had the eighth pick in a 12-team league. Who should be available when the first round came to me but New York Giants running back Joe Morris. I snapped him up.
And who was available when it came my turn in the second round but St. Louis Cardinals running back Lyvonia "Stump" Mitchell. "I'll take Stump," I yelled.
How could I go wrong? Morris had rushed for nearly 2,900 yards and 35 touchdowns in the previous two seasons. Mitchell had nearly 2,600 total rushing and receiving yards in those two years.
Both crashed in '87, managing just eight touchdowns between them. I finished last in my league.
So, remember as you enjoy all those stories about franchise owners picking up great fantasy players in the middle or late rounds. Such good fortune was possible only because the other owners were a lot like me in '87.
Dim-witted.
This just goes to show The Fantasy Buzz, a collective bunch from The Bee, is human just like our readers.
