It took 11 innings, but the Fresno State softball team beat San Diego State 2-0 Saturday night to earn a date with Cal in today's NCAA Fresno Regional championship round.
The Bears (42-24) are unbeaten and need to win only once. Fresno State (53-12), which dropped a 3-0 decision to Cal in Saturday's first game, must win twice to advance to a super regional.
First pitch is 1 p.m. today, with a second game to follow if necessary.
Morgan Melloh (41-8) pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11 to keep Fresno State's hopes alive.
Andrea Ortega's infield single scored both runs in the top of the 11th. With one out, Aja Scheuber and Jenna Cervantez both singled, and wound up on secnd and third after an Aztecs throwing errors. Then with two outs, Ortega hit a two-hop grounder up the middle. Shortstop Jennifer Wisneski drove for the ball and caught it, but she was slow getting up and her throw to first was late.
The last time the Bears and Bulldogs met for a regional title here was in 2005. Fresno State came into the championship round unbeaten and Cal pulled off 3-0 and 1-0 victories to capture the regional.
