Fall colors from trees of the Shinzen Garden at Woodward Park reflect in the lake as a coot breaks the surface. This shot took planning and patience. I saw the colors on the water, decided what lens I needed, and knew that in time a bird would drift by. Luckily, I didn't have to wait too long.

5-year-old Ryan Quinn and sister Bailey, 7, right, pile on dad, Lt. Dan Quinn after he arrived home with the "Redcocks" of Strike Fighter Squadron 22, after he arrived home at Lemoore Naval Air Station, following a five-month deployment aboard the USS Ronald Reagan. The air wing operated in the 5th Fleet Area of Operations, which encompasses the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean, for more than two months. They provided 30 percent of all air support to U.S. and Coalition ground forces in Afghanistatn. In total, the Air Wing flew more than 1,600 sorties in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

I came across Tony Williams holding this sign at the corner of Palm and Belmont. I was hoping to get some real wrath of God, hellfire and brimstone rhetoric from him during our conversation, but Tony was a pretty level headed guy actually. Much to my dismay he didn't have a date penciled in on the calendar for the end times because I really wanted to know how near is "near". Hedging his bets he said he thought that the rapture could come at any time and with no warning, "like a thief in the night" and we need to prepare ourselves for His coming.
By the way..........what's a brimstone?

I photographed this Hmong man while working on a story about the UC Kearney Ag Research Center's Hmong herb garden in Parlier. He didn't speak English so I didn't find out his back story, but his face was just so interesting, I couldn't pass up a quick shot.

Antonia Boscacci, background, 9, of Mountain View takes a tumble in her car while Maverick Wright, 10, of Simi Valley zooms by during the Good Times Quarter Midget Racing Association Mostek Classic Record Breaker Races at the Madera Speedway Sunday. Racers from all over the state came to Madera to compete in the races over the weekend. Boscacci was ok and finished the race.

This was really a step back in time...I was granted a visit inside the historic closed Bow-On building in Chinatown, seeing relics such as the old desk, 48-star flags, eating utensils, frozen in time.

Down facing 'Dogs

Indeed my favorite photo from Friday night's Fresno State-Boise State football game, was taken opposite of any action going on the field. My assignment was to shoot action, but also get fan reaction for a stand-alone element on page A1.

The trick was to show the tone of the game without really knowing the outcome yet. If the photo was of happy, cheering fans, it would contrast sharply with a disappointing loss. At the same time I needed to photograph relevant action for the Sports section - on deadline.

Fortunately for me, I noticed the student section was fairly lively. Many of the students even came wearing face and body paint. So it was very telling to see these same spirited fans hanging their heads as the Bulldogs seemed to fall further and further behind. So when I got this photo, I knew I was covered in case of a loss - which it was. For more photos see the Fresnobee.com photo gallery from the game.

Awkward transition

Spirited seventh grader Christian Xiong, left, wears silver antennae on his head while eating lunch with classmates in the amphitheater at Alta Sierra School in Clovis Monday - the first day of classes for Clovis Unified School kids. Seventh graders have it pretty rough. They go from being the big men on campus at their elementary schools to very small fish in a much bigger pond at their new middle school. They're also learning how to not be kids and transition into young adults. I still remember seventh grade and I think that year does more to shape who you will become more than any other year.

Does this wet suit make me look fat?

It really pays, for the sake of personal embarassment, to not to rent wet suits too big as these teen girl boogie boarders found out after having their fun at Pismo Beach, this last weekend, taking with them some of the Pacific Ocean. The area was bustling with visitors from the Valley, squeezing in days at the coast before the start of school, and taking a break from the warm weather. They caught my eye as I watched my daughters boogie board nearby, and couldn't help but get a good laugh, as did many others as they trudged and jiggled down the beach.
