Imagine my surprise when one of my co-workers told me they saw a photograph I took on a city bus. Back in 2006 for Back Talk, a teen section in the newspaper, I photographed Karey Wedemeyer, a Fresno Fire Captain, who studied nursing and was a loan officer before becoming a firefighter. John Alvin, a Fresno Bee artist who had designed the page the photograph ran on, spotted it. So I was on the look out and then one day I saw the bus heading across town. Naturally I had to photograph it.
It was going to be my daughter's birthday and I knew she loved cats. I borrowed one of her cat books which was shaped like a cat and fanned out into numerous cat heads. I took it into Charlotte's Bakery and asked Josh if he could make me one. It far surpassed my expectations and was so adorable we had a tough time cutting into it. The cool thing was it was totally vegan and made without any dairy products. Not only was it so cute it tasted great too.
I enjoy doing food illustrations because they really need to look enticing on newsprint, not always easy. On this assignment my goal was to make a fresh lemonade mixed drink that did not come across as summery. I took all the ingredients home, since it was easier to work out of my kitchen. I followed the recipe to get the right color minus the simple syrup and vodka, since these ingredients are clear. To add a New Year's feel I grabbed a bottle of my daughters silver glitter and spread it down on the table as a background. I used a 50mm macro lens, focusing only on the top of the liquid.
