CEK-DRAKE-01.jpg
Shot the anticipated Drake concert on Thursday for the paper and Mike's blog. As I was getting ready to go out there I kept thinking of that Seinfeld episode where the gang goes back-and-forth on whether the "love" or "hate" the Drake, a neighborhood character.

Trying to find a excerpt of that episode I found that I wasn't the only one thinking that way.

But after shooting the sold out concert and having my eardrums banged in by music that really isn't my cup of tea, I gotta say I think I side with George on that one.

brefarley.jpgFresno State sophomore Bree Farley of the women's basketball team straps on her face mask upon entering the game against La Tech at the Save Mart Center on Thursday, March 1, 2012. Farley has been wearing the mask to protect her nose after it was broken in a win against Oklahoma on December 8.

I think it would be cool if the mask was black.

fair clean up.jpgWalking around the Fresno Fairgrounds Monday looking to get a shot of the tear down of the Big Fresno Fair after its run, I saw this: a crew of workmen putting a sun into the back of a truck. Made me feel a little sad about warm summer days coming to an end - like "ok, sun, it's back to the shed for you, we'll let you out next spring."

It's always fun to photograph window washers. I grabbed a couple of shots here while covering a protest down at the Convention Center downtown.

missed-catch-1.jpgAlmost saw a really great catch by San Joaquin Memorial's Jordan Stallworth right in front of me during their game with Fresno High. It would have been a sure touchdown as I was standing behind the end zone at McLane Stadium as he came right at me and reaching out for the long throw by quarterback Nic Kinder. But alas, the ball fell to the ground for an incompletion. Checking my review screen I saw just how close it was. Too bad! It made for a pretty interesting photo anyway.

baseballcollision.jpg
This is a series of photos from Wednesday's Division II Central Section baseball playoff game in which Mt. Whitney's James Lopez plowed into Edison catcher Garret Kelly to score the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.

Edison coach Cliff Rold claimed that the collision was a violation of the National Federation of High Schools slide rule and Lopez should have been called out and ejected.

In Andy Boogaard's column today, section commissioner Jim Crichlow says there's little he can do about overturning the call because it is a judgement call on the field and must take into consideration the runner's intent as the play unfolded.

So I've been playing with the Instagram app on my iPhone a lot lately and decided to post a few here from this week. It's a fun app that lets you share mainly iPhone images with friends and then network to get new friends with similar interests in photography styles. My job allows me to be in many different places around town so I started recording some of those less newsworthy scenes through Instagram. And because I'm doing these only with the iPhone, I don't stand out quite so much as when I use my regular dslrs. If you want to follow me on Instagram, my handle is ck_foto or just follow me on Twitter and you'll see the posts.

dive.jpg
Shot two different baseball games today and ended up with two nearly identical images of center fielders diving for the ball but unable to come up with it. The first (top) was Clovis West's James Bitter whose unsuccessful catch cost the Golden Eagles a couple of runs against Buchanan and the second was Fresno State's Brennan Gowens whose miss didn't end up costing the Bulldogs against Ohio State.

MTD CEK FRESNO FANS.jpgOn March 16, 2000, the Fresno State men's basketball team made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 16 years. Bulldog fans cheered on the team while watching on TV at the Silver Dollar Saloon in this photo I made 11 years ago today. Jerry Tarkanian's Bulldogs dance was short-lived however, when they lost the first-round game to Wisconsin.

Ok, so sometimes I end up on assignments where I see things that look pretty cool but have nothing to do with the story. I'll take a photo anyway, right? But then what? How about I show it to you here and you try to guess what it is and where I shot it?

This was a very touching moment Thursday night outside Clovis Community Medical Center as hundreds of members of the Hmong community gathered to pay respects to their leader, General Vang Pao, who died after spending a few days in the hospital with pneumonia and heart problems. I thought it was especially moving when his body was rolling by, people quietly kneeled and one man saluted.

I've shot the Bulldogs entrance on the field at Bulldog Stadium many times, but never quite like this. I was trying to do a panorama which didn't quite work, but this fisheye version of the 'Dogs coming onto the field before the Fresno State-Illinois game last Saturday looked pretty cool.

MTD CEK POTTER 2.jpg
After seeing Justin Thomason's hand-made shirt as he waited in line for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 at Edwards I started to wonder if there really is a rivalry between the two fictional-fantasy-magic book series. Though I haven't read either one, I did a quick google search and found there's been quite a bit of talk about it. I heard The Simpsons even did an episode about it. Maybe it's time for a showdown??

The artful celebration honors both the dead and the cycle of life. Dancing and musical performances were held at Arte Americas following a procession from St. John's Cathedral through downtown Fresno.

catsblog.jpg
Quite a site at the Central Valley SPCA where about 100 cats were brought in over the last two days. The cats were rescued after their owner, a woman with mental health problems, was found to be unfit to care for the animals at her two homes. The Bee printed a front-page story on the situation. The SPCA, which has room for only about 300 cats, is now scrambling to find temporary homes for some of those while it makes room for the new residents, many which will need medical care and treatment. If you can help out, contact the SPCA.

Donations -- marked attention to Beth Caffrey, humane education administrator -- can be mailed to or dropped off at the SPCA, 103 S. Hughes Ave., Fresno, CA 93706 or can be made by calling (559) 233-0115.
