Flight of The Grizzlies

CENTRAL COACH 1 copy.jpg

Central high school basketball coach Loren Lebeau is the most animated coach I've ever seen. I knew if I waited long enough during Saturday's Central Section championship game against Edison that I'd see him leave the ground. It's hard to take your eyes off Lebeau as he leaps, twists and grimaces at every play.

The Grizzlies lost a heartbreaker to Edison on a last second shot in one of the best high school basketball games I've ever seen.

Soccer Playoffs

SPT KLH SELMA CVC 2 copy.jpg

Soccer is never easy to shoot. Even when the conditions are at their best it is often difficult to get a really nice picture. When I arrived at Central Valley Christian High School in Visalia I was stunned to see how poorly the stadium was lit. I was forced to shoot at 3200 ASA and use a shutter speed of 1/250 of a second. In sports photography 1/250 is as slow as I ever shoot. Even then, most of my pictures pick up the motion of the players and the images are unusable. You just have to shot tons of pictures and hope you get something sharp enough to use in the paper.

I was pleasantly surprised when I edited my shoot and found this shot of Selma goalkeeper Simmi Nijjar stopping a shot by Central Valley Christian's Alex Paredes.

The playoff game between Selma and CVC was a classic. It took two overtimes before Selma won 3-2

Yosemite

Trees copy2.jpg

I'm not a very good landscape photographer but I can't resist giving it a try when I visit Yosemite. It was overcast all day in the park so my plans for using the famous Yosemite light never happened.

Chasing Rainbows

rainbow birds copy redo.jpg

I spotted this flock of birds flying across a rainbow after a storm blew through Fresno Tuesday. It was just minutes before the sun set and the low angle of the light really makes the rainbow vivid against the dark sky.

Pass Required For Entry

Passes.jpg

Covering as many sporting events as I do you tend to end up with a massive number of photo/press credentials. As I was cleaning off my desk at work I found this pile of passes from the past few years. I'll add them to the several hundred I have at home and maybe if I have enough, I'll weave them into some sort of Halloween costume next year.

Wishing I Was Fishing.

River.jpg

Until I get a chance to go fishing this year I'm just going to have to be satisfied with the occasional glimpse of the Kings River. I spotted this scene of clouds reflected in the river near Pine Flat Dam Sunday and it made me feel just a little bit better.

I'm not really sure what to say about this.

This is what happens when your camera accidently fires a picture as you walk down the streets of Fresno on a rainy night.

Faded

Flag copy.jpg

I saw this faded flag in a window as I was walking to the car after shooting an assignment. I was drawn to the fact that the whole scene has such a faded look that it almost appears to be a black and white image.

Cowboy Blues

I photographed this cowboy at the pro bullriding event at the Save Mart Center. As the riders were being introduced the lights were dimmed and the arena filled with cool blue light.

Bulldog basketball player Paul George nervously awaits a timeout so he can have the team's trainer lance a rather large boil that has formed on the side of his head

Talk about mixed messages. How is it possible to have the words "future" and "end times" on the same sign?

Bye Bye Falcons

SPT KLH FALCONS 2.jpg

Before working at The Bee I had never photographed hockey. At first I found it difficult to shoot but after a while it became one of my favorite sports to cover. It wasn't until January 2008 that I finally was able to make a hockey photograph that had a really unique look to it. This picture taken from the rafters of the Save Mart Center during a fight on the ice is one of my favorites.

I will miss shooting the Falcons and I want to thank the team for providing me with the chance to learn to enjoy photographing a great sport.

wrestling.jpg

I can never photograph wrestling without feeling like I've seen something I'm not supposed to see. Usually when I edit my pictures from a wrestling match I come across a few images that just look too weird for publication in anything that doesn't come shrink wrapped with a warning label.

Feel free to create a caption for this one.

Not So Final Resting Place?

Essay 2 copy.jpg

I saw this hearse parked in downtown Fresno and wasn't sure if it was waiting to be repaired or if it was going to that big salvage yard in the sky.

Unless a hearse is parked outside a church or cemetery it just looks out of place. I once saw a hearse going through the drive-through window of a Burger King and was afraid to look and see if it had any cargo aboard.
