It's Rio for 2016 Olympics

Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the host of the 2016 Games on Friday, with Chicago getting tossed in the first round of the selection process. That was a blow to President Barack Obama, who had made a personal apeal on behalf of Chicago. The International Olympic Committee made the selection in its meeting in Copenhagen.

"Rio de Janeiro was voted the winner over Madrid in the final round of voting, the I.O.C. having already delivered the an unexpectedly early knockout blow to Chicago, which was eliminated in the first round," according to the New York Times. "Tokyo was ousted in the second."

The Los Angeles Times summed up the Obama political problem this way:

"Chicago's elimination was one of the more shocking defeats in IOC voting history. The city had long been viewed as a front-runner. But the emotional appeals from Obama and his wife Michelle -- who both had flown to Copenhagen to make Chicago's case -- fell on deaf ears in the European-dominated IOC."

I'm not really sure why Obama took the political risk of actually appearing before the IOC on behalf of the Chicago Olympic bid. It was a no-win situation for him. If Chicago lost, it would be a blow to his prestige. If Chicago got the bid, it would have been seen as a favor for his Chicago friends.

Obama, the greatest of all internationalist presidents, teleprompter, Michelle and Oprah in hand, has been running around the world for nine months telling everybody how much his country stinks, that it’s the cesspool-on-the-hill. Now the world and the Olympic committee, have rejected Obama’s begging. It’s probably racism, but we are awaiting the final word from Jimmy Carter, Barney Frank, and Obama’s alter ego, Van Jones.

Poor Michelle, she "sacrificed" (her word) so much for the bought-and-paid-for politicians in Chicago. Maybe it was Copenhagen right-wing talk radio that is at fault!

It was the theater of the absurd! All those carbon footprints for nothing!

It must have been a shock to the all-Obama-all-the-time networks. I wonder what Katie Cupcake is going to say about all of this?

Never underestimate the wisdom of the public...those not under the trance of "the Messiah"...and the "HOPE & CHANGE" mantra.

Now, get back to work on the real problems in America, Barack. Suspend the Hollywood appearances; the celebrity nights on Broadway; the junkets around the Globe. We have serious problems to address. Solutions will require substance and capable advisors. Unfortunately, basketball and teleprompter reading neither qualify.

I'm very pleased the world told obama that his charisma does not always work in their real world. Additionally, we don't need to reward the corrupt Chicag cronies of Obama with the 100's of millions they were hoping he would hand them to clean up Chicago and fatten their wallets.

Well, it looks like the erudite Europeans are racist, knuckle-dragging neanderthals too.

Great Drudge headline: "The ego has landed."

The Los Angeles Times summed up the Obama political problem this way: "Chicago's elimination was one of the more shocking defeats in IOC voting history."

Since 1896, only the United States and Greece hosted the Summer Olympiad THREE times. A few nations were hosts twice and all the other nations just once. Now since the beehivers are familiar with Alexis de Tocqueville, author of the renowned "DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA", we shall quote him again: "...Their vanity is not only greedy, but restless and jealous; it will grant nothing, whilst demands everything."

Well it was not a defeat for Barack Obama. The vote was not racially motivated. The Americans just did not get the Summer Olympiad a fourth time. And Rio de Janeiro had been under consideration for several years. And now the vote is in. That simple and that benign.

Epilogue

In a future presidential campaign, a revisionist spawned by Obama politics seizes the first opportunity to publicly apologize for the Chicago Sales Pitch of 2009 while attending an ALBA celebration. Relabeling it as another example of how America expected more from the world than it was willing to give. Thus a successor finally assimilates America into a newly changed hemisphere which the Obama administration assisted Chavez in establishing. The candidate distances himself from the historical pedigree by freely denying the policies of Obama himself. He returns home to address his party at the National Convention.

How long before Obama and Chicago’s brass-knuckled fixers blame Bush?

Invoking Occam's Razor, it would simply seem that the IOC felt it was time for the up and coming Brazil to host an Olympic event - the first one in South America.

This is criticism of Obama? A right-wing critic on this blog calls him the Messiah, and then another right-wing critic says how dare Obama call himself the Messiah. You guys make up lies about him and then say how dare Obama lie. Amazing trickery. Criticize his policies. If you don't like people calling him the Messiah, tell your pal Rush about it. He's the one doing it.

Listen to yourselves people. It’s getting nauseating. Let’s look at some facts. The Atlanta Olympics resulted in a profit of $10 million. There were significant improvements to Atlanta’s physical infrastructure including street-scaping, road improvements, parks, expansion of the airport and public transportation and redevelopment of public housing projects. It also provided millions in profits to local business. People of Atlanta credit the Olympics for the magnificent city they now have. The improvements could never have happened without the Olympics and they still reap the benefits from it. The 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles made a profit of $250 million. This does not include the profits of local businesses; hotels, restaurants, travel, vendors, etc. All the games provided thousands of jobs in the years preceding the Olympics in preparation for the event improving the infrastructure needed to host it and thousands more during and after the event.

There are approximately 195 countries in the world. Approximately 141 of these are classified as weak or failing 3rd world countries leaving 54 countries that may be capable of pulling off an Olympic games. Of these, my opinion is about 29 of these actually have the capability of hosting it; still a significant number. The United States has hosted the Olympic not 4 but 8 times:
1904 Summer Olympics St. Louis, Missouri
1932 Winter Olympics Lake Placid, New York
1932 Summer Olympics Los Angeles, California
1960 Winter Olympics Squaw Valley, California
1980 Winter Olympics Lake Placid, New York
1984 Summer Olympics Los Angeles, California
1996 Summer Olympics, Atlanta, Georgia
2002 Winter Olympics, Salt Lake City
To keep things fair on the world stage, the chances of the United States scoring another Olympics anytime soon was a long shot. Seems to me Obama was doing his job. He spends a couple of days trying and help out a long shot for massive return in jobs and influx of cash into the United States. The competition is stiff; the world economy is bad so every country needs it and many are sending their own “President type people.” It was worth the shot. Jim points out the it was “a no-win situation for him (Obama).” You folks criticize Obama for trying and paint his efforts as personal shortcomings, grandstanding, playing favorites... Seems to me he is more concerned with our country than his personal popularity. Sounds like a nice character trait to me.

To quote another blog of Jim’s, “It's much easier attacking your opponents' ideas than having to come up with ideas of your own to make the nation better. This attack-dog politics is one reason that major problems are not getting solved…. Democrats and Republicans are not committed to fixing America, but are only interested in getting the upper hand.” Most bloggers here agreed; however, what I see here on this and most of the other blogs is American citizens acting the exact same way as we are criticizing of government officials. No wonder our entire country is stagnant and spinning its wheels. We are a country full of armchair critics. As Steve pointed out in his blog is has gotten insanely ludicrous, “A right-wing critic on this blog calls him the Messiah, and then another right-wing critic says how dare Obama call himself the Messiah.”

Obama is our President. When he does something stupid I call it stupid (and I usually write him a letter). When he does something right, I say good job and cheer for more. I was the same way with Bush. Why do you people have to have these “stupid liberal”… “stupid conservative” mudslinging events? What is our country full of anyway, a bunch of school yard children fighting over marbles? I think we all are putting our country in poor light. Ya’ll keep saying Obama keeps telling the world that our country stinks. I think the rest of us are SHOWING the world that our country stinks. Isn’t a bit embarrassing for anyone?

Stevo...Lies?...wasn't "BHO" the one who said the oceans would calm and the earth would begin to heal upon his election?...Yes, that was the "Annointed One"...sounds Messianic to me but being under his trance you are not really concerned about what "El Uno" says...only that "He" says it.Continue your worship at the peril of your nation and its people.

Kim...I'm interested to hear what a self professed Democrat wrote to President Bush about saying "Good Job"(1 or 2 examples would be nice).I think the Obama Team gave it their best shot and came up short...No big deal...It's a non-issue other than the cost to taxpayers for all the air travel and accomodations. Was the whole entourage on our dime and do you think the city of Chicago should pick up the whole tab as it was their "Baby"?I do.

You're right Kim...some here really are nauseating. It's why I hardly look in anymore. They've taught me how to hate people I don't even know, and that isn't who I like to be.

You know I support Obama and everything he's trying to do to better this country, but this IOC decision had nothing to do with him. In fact, none of this has anything to do with Obama, and he should have never tried to make an argument for Chicago in the first place. I can appreciate him wanting to bring the Olympics back to the U.S., but I really don't think it's his place to toss in his two cents. But, leave it to the radical right to make it something it's not.

Chicago has too much crime and violence in the news right now, and besides, Rio is a beautiful city that knows how to throw a celebration. Not only that, the Olympics have never been held in South America. Rio was the obvious choice, they deserve it, and I'm glad they got it.

I think Carter should call President Obama now with a few suggestions about how to proceed in expressing our national bitterness. When it coms to the Olympics, he knows all the tricks.

Sure Brian. I usually write our government when they are doing something I don't like; however, I have written to Bush in support of his position on gun control and I also wrote him about the "shoe throwing" incident. I felt he handled that with class. I also wrote to him about the stupid changes they were making to the NAGPRA legislation and asked Bush to fight against it. The only other "nice" letters I've written were to Hilary Clinton during President Clinton's indiscretions. All other correspondence on the state and federal level have been in regards to things I don't like, laws that need changing or I am fighting against.

Now you answer one for me Brian. Why is it when I write a blog that is a bit unpopular you consistently pull out some minor point and make an issue of it but ignore the entire point I was making? Is that a deflecting strategy to take attention away from a point that may have some validity?

Yes, I am a registered Democrat. I used to be a registered Republican. Big deal. I am not a robot. I don't like a President based on their party affiliation. I judge each on the job they do. Partisan bickering however is akin to being a robot. Blaming members of an entire party for something stupid that one member of a party did or said shows no thought. To me it shows ignorance. No one in any party all think alike. Obama is a Democrat but I didn't vote for him. He is however, my President and I will respect and judge him on his actions and his alone. I have written to him about how he expresses himself about America to other countries. I think he should take a more forceful stance and quit apologizing for who we are. I have also written to him about the healthcare issue. I like that he is addressing it but not how he is addressing it. I have also told him to find a way to get rid of Nancy Pelosi. She is hurting this Democratic Presidency. So yes, I can be bipartisan with praise as well as criticism. I keep telling you I'm perfect Brian, when are you going to believe me?!? HA HA

Scotty...welcome back...I miss you taking your swing at right and then trying to elevate yourself above the fray(a real talent).I,unlike you,do not feel hatred toward anyone on the blog...I feel a lot of things but "Hate" is not one of them.I extremely dislike what the president, you helped elect, is doing to our country but I reserve hate for the "Devil and his Minions" and I'm not sure that "BHO" is working for "The Devil"... just yet.I am curious as to how bloggers are prepared for "Natural Disaster" and how they are preparing for the already beginning "Man and Woman-made Disaster".A few moments of everybody's dwindling time is greatly appreciated on this subject.

Brian, Talk about the Ego has Landed, You call yourself "Brain Brian." I think a blogger here named you "Bumbling Brian" which seems to most of us as much more accurate.

RE: NAGRPRA and President Bush. It has no connection to the 2016 summer Olympic games, but since it has been brought up, I have a (perhaps very stupid) question. What is wrong with returning to Native Americans the artifacts that are being found at old Indian burial sites? Of course my quaint idea is that burial sites should not be disturbed in the first place. Recently I watched a series of TV documentaries about the National Parks. I made the astonishing discovery that if it were not for a number of dedicated influential individuals, our National Parks would have developed into amusement parks. Some think that every vacant square inch of America should be developed for the purposes of making dollar and cents profits. Maybe that is what the modern Olympic Games have become? But I hope that it's no so.

Janie..."Brain" is a nickname some folks gave me because my name is frequently misspelled...nothing else intended...especially any kind of superior intelligence.I'm just a regular guy.

Kim...that was the part of the post I found interesting.I didn't intend to create any drama.Personally,I don't write to politicians...I use that time to write to friends and loved ones...I get more out of it.

Isabell, nothing is wrong with NAGPRA as originally written. The changes that were being made to it would have let anyone claim they were Native American and they could take anything of antiquity anywhere in the United States. The changes did not protect the resources nor the Native Americans. It actually weakened a law that was working just fine. For instance my husband is genetically related to Indians in the southwest; we can prove it with genealogy and dna results. However, with the changes proposed for NAGPRA he could go up to Alaska and lay claim to any artifacts he wanted and do whatever he wanted with them because he had an Indian bloodline. That would hardly be fair to the real descendants of that area. He would never do that but not everyone has the same ethics as he. Anyone could claim to be Indian, rape the remaining resources out there for their own purposes; trafficking in antiquities are very lucrative. That is what I was trying to stop, not NAGPRA as originally written.

Kim...I'm like 1/8 or 1/16 Blackfoot through my grandmother and have been looking for more reasons to dump Cali for Alaska...thanks for the info.

Thanks for the information on NAGPRA ( Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act ) Since it has nothing to do with the Summer 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, I shall forgo asking for more enlightenment on the to me new and interesting topic. What has to do with the thread topic is the prediction that the world shall end December 21st; 2012. Well, at least the English can get their 2012 London games in edgewise. Don't forget your Mackintosh or at least an umbrella.

But alas Brian, because of efforts of people similar to mine (I wrote every single Senator two separate letters and emails)and helped get archaeological associations involved in discussions in D.C., the changes were voted down. A lot of insignificant voices raised together can achieve results. Another disaster averted. I know some very realistic artifact reproduction individuals and companies that I can hook you up with though. Fifteen years ago we were on our way to Alaska to live and were interrupted by the birth of our first kid. There is an inverse relationship between the number of kids and the number of dollars one has. I don't think we will get up there soon if at all now. I'd love to see you go, then you can send me pictures and stories. Maybe you can become a bobsledder in the next Olympics. Nice attempt in bringing it back to the topic don't you think? HA
