Fresno Bee metro columnist Bill McEwen and Editorial Page Editor Jim Boren will be at their usual Kids Day spot on the southwest corner of Blackstone and Shaw Avenue on Tuesday morning selling the special Kids Day edition of The Bee. We'll start selling at 5:30 a.m. and should be there until noon. You'll be able to buy Kids Day papers all over the Valley on Tuesday, but we're hosting the ultimate Kids Day party. So even if you buy your paper elsewhere, come by and see us.
We have several treats for you. The Kids Day paper is $1 each and proceeds will go to Children's Hospital Central California. Bill will be autographing his book: "It's a Dry Heat." If you buy $10 worth of Kids Day papers, he'll throw in a signed copy of the book.
We'll also have celebrity news hawkers helping us. Mayor Ashley Swearengin will be there at 9:30 a.m. to help sell papers and thank community residents for donating to Children's Hospital. Former Mayor Alan Autry will join us for an hour beginning about 8:15 a.m.
We plan other surprises so don't miss this event.
Last year, more than 5,000 volunteers joined the Kids Day effort. Since 1988, Kids Day has raised about $3.25 million for the hospital. The Bee partners in this event with KFSN Channel 30 and Children's Hospital, as well as hundreds of other Valley businesses.and organizations.
MOI plans to board public transport and be there quite early. Have told all me mates in Fresno to take part in the very noble effort.
MOI adores Jim and Bill, and to keep the contest even will devide the $100.00 between the two.....wonder if Bill will give MOI 10 copies of his book????? They make lovely presents to give to folks.
MOI has issued a challenge to Mayor Swerarengin to match the $100.00........will she???
I love kids day because it is awesome to see folks donate to support something in our own backyards. I have been out there for the past several years with my daughter and her school.
I predict no less than two letters to the editor whining about how unsafe this is and I have a question...If Jim gets clipped by a car is it a legitimate workmens comp claim? This could be an excellent exit strategy in a troubled economy.
I predict that there will be no more Kids Day after the first adult or child is struck by a vehicle. Seriously, I have seen people walking in the middle of the street to sell the papers. If someone accidentally hits them, who is to blame?
I saw old film clippings about early automobile courtesy. The cow on the road had the right of way. On Kids Day we should give the kids the right of way. If a car trip is an errand of urgency, use another route.
