How green is my Valley?

It's a question for the ages: "Have you ever wondered how they make electricity from cows?"

The Great Valley Center proposes to answer that question, and others, with a two-day Green Bus Tour of the Valley on Feb. 19-20. Participants will be taken to Valley businesses and facilities from Modesto to Tulare to learn about solar power, methane energy production, electric sewer ponds, sustainable food production, environmentally conscious design and new green technologies.

This isn't Buck Rogers stuff of the future. An astonishing amount of new technology is being employed around the Valley, and it's already paying off for those smart enough to take the plunge.

Check out the flier for the tour here, or visit the Great Valley Center's Web site for information.

Methane gas is not Buck Rogers stuff but basic organic chemistry. My professor insisted some odd 65 year ago that we knew the benzene ring. All I can remember is ethane, methane, butane, and propane. I did not know that cow dung was used to make electricity here in the valley.

I also read in yesterday's Fresno Bee that the high concentration of dairy cattle is making children sick. I guess there are varying shades of green.

"Dizzy"...figures you'd be an authority on "Methane".
