Wish you had a dollar for every time you've heard that, or something like it? Me too. Might take some of the sting out of watching the economy sink deeper in the toilet.

It's an old refrain, according to Christopher Clausen, writing in The American Scholar. Clausen traces our penchant for exalting the current election -- whenever it is -- way back to the Civil War. He quotes a leading politician of the day calling the 1924 presidential campaign between Calvin Coolidge and John W. Davis -- remember that earthshaking outcome? -- "the most important in the history of this country since the Civil War."

Does this year's election measure up to the high standard of "most important in history?"

It is so important to vote because it cant be counted if you dont vote so get out there.

Strange that Russ Minick would cite Coolidge in his (in my opinion) sarcastic prose for the blog. And where can I send my Dollar because I too believe that this is a crucial election coming up.

I'm going to resist the urge to run off at the mouth and say simply yes...it's very important.

I have to say though...I find it shocking what some of the people in the McCain/Palin crowds are doing.

I have to say that sadly people have grown accudtomed to the attacks and now expect them. I think it is great that they can say nice things about each other even in the last weeks. I like that McCain told his supporters that they have to remain respectful.

The level of importance in any election is relative to the person voting. Those less affected by the outcome will place less importance on it. I believe a higher percentage of people, worldwide even, will feel the effects of the outcome of this election but it still depends on an individual's perspective. This is another reason we should all deliberate, educate ourselves and take our voting responsibility seriously because every election is critical to someone, somewhere.

All the accusations that the McCain-Palin camp are being disrespectful are erroneous. How is it disrespectful or meanspirited to examine and vocalize the record of your opponent, especially when it is filled with so many red flags, as is the record and associations of Obamas. This is a contest, is it not?

If a Republican had even one of the radical, criminal, America-hating, terrorist associations that Obama has, he would have been out of the race long before the primary.

The media, who circles the wagons for Obama, is to blaim for the dismal situation we find ourselves in.

I don't care for Senator Obama. (It's an emotional thing.) But I am not aware
of any reports that impeach his integrity. Knowing Communists is not a crime
in America. Not even being one is a crime.

On the other hand. Sarah Palin is accused of several transgressions in her
capacity as an elected official. Abuse of power is a serious no no in our system.

And to accuse today's media of being liberal is unrealistic, to say the least.

The fact is, Obama doesn't appear to have met Ayers at any time in the past six years. When Obama was running for the Illinois legislature in 1995, Ayers, at this point a Chicago professor, hosted a fundraiser for Obama at his house, and they later served on the board of a community anti-poverty group. Obama claims, quite plausibly, that when he met Ayers he was unaware of Ayers' radical past. I can imagine that's probably true seeing as how Obama was about 8 years old at the time and living in Indonesia.

While “guilt by association” is one of the more bogus attacks in any political campaign, the attacks on Barack Obama over William Ayers are particularly “ridiculous,” in the words of one Republican legislator from Illinois.

Barack Obama lived in the same area of Chicago as Ayers, and Ayers has been a respected, politically active member of that community for years. Considering that, it’s actually remarkable how little the two have to do with each other. Early in Barack Obama’s career, he attended one reception in his own honor at Ayers’ house. They also were separately asked by a Republican-created charitable organization to serve on that organization’s board. And that’s it. . "Mr. Ayers played no role in Mr. Obama's appointment," reported the New York Times. There’s no friendship between the two, no relationship, no history of working together.

Again quoting the Times, “Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called ‘somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.’” Even Republican State Rep. Diana Nelson, who has worked with both men, calls the attacks “ridiculous,” and declared to NPR, “There is no reason at all to smear Barack Obama with this association. It's nonsensical, and it just makes me crazy. It's so silly."

Now with the McCain/Palin campaign trying to incite riots by smearing Obama and painting him to be something he's not, I find it amazing that anyone blames the media. Certainly McCain himself seems a little sorry of what he's started. He knows this stuff isn't accurate yet he chose to spin it and plant these questions in the angry mob's minds. You want him as our president?

I trust McCain more than Obama. I think that some people he has associated with reflect badly on him and I still haven't heard how he will implement change and don't think he knows how he will do it either. Anyone can talk things up but it is in how it will get done that counts. I would gladly pay more taxes to make things bettee wvwn though I pay quite enough already. We would see alot of things different if they had the same salaries, medical and social security we have but they gave no worries.

The mounting evidence that ACORN, the group Obama has served for 20 years, has a long-record of, and is presently committing voter fraud, registering felons, dead people, and as many as 72 registrations for the same person, in hopes of stuffing the ballot box on Election Day, and stealing the election.

God will come through and expose this radical, Chicago street thug for what he is to the American people, before election day. As the FBI continues to raid ACORN, it will hurt Obama. This association is rock solid. Not only did Obama train ACORN activists at ACORN's Illinois affiliate, he served as their general counsel, later channeled millions to this radical group when he gained control over the money William Ayers got from the Annenberg Foundation, and then as State Senator channeled millions more in funding from taxpayers.

All of these seedy, interconnected associations are not only disgraceful to the Presidential election process, but will increasingly become the stumbling block for Obama.

The more we learn about Obama's real life story, the more it will reinforce the doubts that Reverend Wright first put in our minds. Americans will again question Obama's values, and deduct he and his angry wife, are not fit for the White House.

It's a far reach to connect the name Annenberg with any real or imagined "street thug."

Maybe you missed my point, the street thug I refer to in my post is Obama. He has pulled the strings to funnel millions of dollars in taxpayer funds to ACORN, a group with a 30-year record of voter fraud group. This is a group thats purpose is to undermine WE THE PEOPLE. And WE THE TAXPAYER ARE PAYING FOR THEIR EFFORTS. When is Congress going to cut their funding off? One thing for sure, it won't happen under the rule of Obama.

ACORN's powerful lobbyists, with the support of Senators Obama, Chris Dodd, John Kerry, and other Democrats also played an big part in strongarming banks into giving loans to those who could not pay them back, under the threat of minority discrimination. This too, is a national disgrace, and the underlying cause of the economic meltdown we are seeing today.

There is a strong connection of Obama-Ayers to the Annenberg Foundation, whos radical educational ideas are rooted in the foundation that capitalism causes inequality, and racism, and must be eliminated, in indoctrinates we exchange capitalism (the right to make a profit) for the Communist ideals that everyone is equal in all ways.

We have heard Obama utter these ideals throughout his career, and in recent days... telling a plumber it is only fair to SPREAD THE WEATLH. Sounds alot like the Karl Marx mission statement:

This does not say equal outcome. The beauty of this passage is that it is up to each one of us to take advantage of the opportunity, or not. We are free to make whatever we choose of our lives.

You attempt to smear the long, extraordinarily successful, political career of President Ronald Reagan, based on the disease he was afflicted with in his final years, is truly shameless.

Reagan, in fact began his Reaganomics style of governing in 1967 (1967-1975), when he became the 33rd Governor of California. His Presidency began in 1981-89. It was well after his final term as President that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, a progressive disease.

According to Wikipedia:
"in 1994 the former president disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease earlier in the year and died ten years later at the age of ninety-three. He ranks highly among former U.S. presidents in terms of approval rating."
