Channel 30 has reported that death threats have been made against Mayor Alan Autry and Pastor Jim Franklin over their support of Proposition 8, the measure on Tuesday's ballot to overturn a Supreme Court decison legalizing same-sex marriage. Click here for the Channel 30 story.
Here's a part of the Channel 30 story:
Police Chief Jerry Dyer said the written threats against Mayor Alan Autry and Cornerstone Pastor Jim Franklin were very detailed and mentioned their participation in a pro-proposition 8 rally this weekend. That's the California ballot initiative that would ban same sex marriage. "We have significant information regarding threats against Mayor Autry and Pastor Franklin and it's as a result as their participation on the "Yes on 8" that occurred here recently," said Dyer.
So the way of fighting those who are for Prop 8 is to just threaten to kill them. Well thats mighty big of them. That is not going to stop them from being passionate in their position on this.
This is both ironic, and revealing of just who are the intolerant among us. Extreme intolerance, in the form of Stalinist tactics, are being perpetrated by the pro-gay community.
Red,
Get real, this criminal activity does not speak for everyone, and you know it.
Also this is not about the pro-gay community, it is about equal rights.
Individuals on BOTH sides are not being civil on this issue with all the torn-up and stolen signs.
Cheap shots only make matters worse.
Seriously redpeach, I'm an opponent of Prop. 8. I haven't stolen one sign or made a single death threat. Say something of substance next time.
"Just Rich"...who on the "No on Prop.8" side is receiving death threats? You seem to have all the answers so maybe you can "Get Real" and enlighten us.
Brian, this isn't a zero-sum game. Some a - - holes making death threats to proponents of Prop 8 doesn't somehow validate the proposition itself or represent anyone but the parties involved.
Yes on 8 folks receive a death threat, therefore it must be from the left wing. With that kind of logic may we also assume that bombing of abortion clinics, death threats to doctors, and a few murders as well would automatically be the work of the right wing? Or... you can start acting like sane individuals and quit this hysterical finger pointing. Either meaning of hysterical will suffice. Or... I can play your way. Brian and redpeach did it officer... By your logic it doesn't have to be true... right?
Sometimes actions speak louder than words.
These are the REALITIES that are happening! It seems very unreal that another can treat another individual like this. I think we need to respect each others' opinions and please quit the harassment and insanity.
=======================================================
Supporters of Prop. 8 have received...
=======================================================
** Mob-like mentality against individuals of Pro. Prop. 8 (which includes death threats, harrassment, groups ganging up on individuals, etc.)
** "Keying" of cars (property damage) with Yes on 8 signs on them. You can be better than that!
** Blocking/Egging of places of worship and harrassment of individuals going into buildings. How would you like it if your dear 80-year-old Grandma came home crying because some insensitive person started yelling at her because she chose to worship? Think about if your prized Corvette or Volvo got egged or someone started yelling at you just for going to the store?
** Why are gay/lesbian groups targeting the VERY YOUNG (5-6 years old) children in public schools and placing 'No on 8' target advertisement at our youth who frequently shop at the malls? Gay and lesbian parent(s), would you like me teach your children that gay and lesbian relationships are wrong? Of course not. You are entitled to teach whatever you want to them (Hopefully, we teach them love and respect for each other.) They are YOUR children... not the schools, not mine.
** Harassment of Prop. 8 supporters in front of young children. Who has their own agenda and don't care about rights of children? Even the country of FRANCE says, "NO to same-sex marriage". Childrens' rights are more important than an alternate lifestyle there.
** Irrevelant name calling. How can a Supporter of Prop. 8 be a terrorist? Who is the one screaming obscenities, being aggressive, and "being in the face" of another?
**Sign stealing on private property is treaspassing and theft. Are you willing to risk that to your good name? What is it really going to accomplish besides being labeled as a thief? You CAN be better than that.
It's NOT only about equal rights though.
It's about more than that. It's about belief. We understand equal rights which legally registered domestic partners have in CA. It's also about freedom of religion. Do you believe that every CHURCH should be FORCED to marry a gay or lesbian couple if they don't believe in it? Do you believe that a doctor should be FORCED to perform an artificial insemination on a lesbian couple if he/she doesn't believe in it? (This is already happening.)
Lastly, I invite you to study the history of marriage and in different cultures. It is interesting.
Please don't send death threats or harrassment letters. I don't read them. ;-)
Adam...I understand your point but Prop.8 is valid to those that support it and while there are those of questionable intelligence on both sides I have heard of no death threats against non-supporters which ,to me, shows a respect for ALL life by the "Yes on 8" crowd.
Ironic that a post on extortion from proponents generates 130+ posts, but a post about death threats from the opponents has only generated 6 in a couple of days. An exaggerated report opens up an opportunity for merciless attacks on Christians and their faith, but death threats directed at two Christians; where's the outrage?
Adam and Rich, your denouncement of this shows character; that deserves respect...
Matt - That is because we all ready know what the diatribe will be. I'll summarize: The leftist did it. All leftists are bad. The right wing are virtuous martyrs. Nothing bad ever happens to the other side. When we present facts that prove those assumptions inaccurate it is ignored. What is the point? Cut and paste the 130 posts to this blog and you'll basically have what you are missing.
Matt, of course any death threat from any side should be denounced. It's a despicable thing to do and I can't imagine anyone supporting such a thing. Even if the person(s) thought it would be funny, it's not. It demonstrates how out of hand this proposition, this issue, has become.
And I think the 130+ posts compared to this one is a misleading comparison. This topic has come up in many different forms, under many different titles, but the discussion still gets back to the same old argument. I think we're just all tired of repeating the same things over and over. Tomorrow it will be voted on and then the argument will change.
No on Prop 8!
The threats were probably from some right-wing wacko(s) trying to elicit sympathy and support for the “yes on 8” vote. Since we know the right’s trademark election strategy is to sell fear, until there is proof otherwise, this seems to be the likely explanation.
Well, the local media have sure changed their tune on this story. From certainty on Friday, it's now "claimed" to have received emailed death threats.
And, for being "close to making an arrest" there's been dead silence ever since. Did the cops discover it was a hoax, created by a Yes On 8 supporter? Are they waiting until after the election to reveal what really happened?
And if it passes ...will the "No on Prop.8 Gang" accept it and move on or will they keep trying to overturn the will of the majority.I am figuring there is already a "Plan B".KT&T...it probably would be a right wing extremist that would bomb an abortion clinic thinking they may save lives. Why would the left do it...they are all for killing the unborn(50 million and counting) not the abortion provider. For a leftist to do it would be counter productive.Whom do you consider more evil?Your answer will tell a lot about you so think it through.Maybe you need to use a life line.Phone a friend...Hello "Dizzy".
Brian Murray - I think anybody, right, left, moderate, up or down that uses violence or the threat of violence to make a point, express their opinion or prejudices, is immoral and despicable in the eyes of our country, humanity and God. As for the leading innuendo about abortion that you hope to trap me in... I would never have an abortion myself and I have taught my children that it is wrong. It is an issue between a pregnant woman, their partner and their God. As for thinking it through... I didn't have to; I am very clear on my idea of morality.
Now I have a question for you. You recently mentioned your 80 year old mother and your recent visit. It appears you have warm feelings for her and I assume respect her. You made a point of telling us her age, as if it had a bearing on her status. Isabell told us she is 81 and she is also someone's mother. She is educated and mannerly. She has a foreign upbringing but has lived as an American for a long time; which is quite an interesting perspective to have. Just because you don't agree with her, may not understand a point she is making, etc.; does that mean she does not deserve respect or at least common courtesy? Isabell and I don't always agree and we have developed a friendship talking things through. Why are you so disrespectful? Does your mom have more rights than other people's moms? Your answer will tell a lot about you so think it through.
Kim, I beg to differ with your perspective on Isabell. She threatened to have me charged with stalking and a hate crime, because I express my diagreement with her in DIALOGUE, here on the blog. They she insinuated she would do something TO ME with less fanfare. How is that behavior mannerly?
This issue will never die no matter what the outcome is. They will always try to have the will of the people overturned and we will continue to fight for Adam & Eve
Red, you keep saying Isabell wanted to charge you with stalking or a hate crime, or arrested because you disagree. Can you find that in the archives please? I couldn't find it and I was just curious where it is.
I did not threaten redpeach with anything, even after she told me that I shall go back to "the socialist country I came from." And the thing I was doing without fanfare was to pray for her. By then I still thought that she was a he. But prayers are good for either gender.
Jackie Krage; you are so entitled to your believes about what is sinful and what is not. But it was Adam and Eve who brought God's wrath upon us us for having comitted the original sin.
Redpeach you have an overactive imagination. That is good in children's stories but you are out in the real world now.
Brian I am waiting for your answer.
Just as I expected Brian, your comments are just a bunch of hot air. Keep beating that chest of yours buddy now I know that when addressed with real issues you run for the hills.
