More on politics and alcohol

First we had the letter from Matthew Nolan of Fresno, a doorman at a local bar, who witnessed a fight between pro-Proposition 8 folks and opponents of the initiative. His thoughtful conclusion: "[T]his should stand out as a firm reminder that politics and alcohol do not mix."

But now comes word that, at least on election day, it's not a problem in seven states.

According to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States -- or DISCUS, which makes me think of hurling -- Kentucky, Indiana and South Carolina have statewide election day bans on sales of alcohol at restaurants, bars and package stores. Utah and West Virginia ban the sale of alcohol at package stores on election day, and Alaska and Massachusetts also ban election day alcohol sales, except that local governments can make an exemption.

The booze industry calls these "silly Prohibition-era restrictions." Well, sure, they've got a dog in this hunt. But I don't know, after reading Mr. Nolan's letter. Peace, people.

I think it's a great idea actually !
They're not playing bingo or lotto at a Pub for goodness sake, but taking a citizen's responsibility to determine (hopefully) who should in fact govern the entire country !!!!

Sorry, but I agree!
Alcohol is a big enough pain in the butt as it is.......It certainly doesn't need to rear its ugly head at election time !

Good Work....!
Stick to your feelings on this one !

Seems logical. Contracts are not valid if under the influence so it stands to reason that voting would not be either.

It used to be illegal to sell alcohol on Sundays. I even liked that. It was a reminder to stop, have a church, family picnic, calm, relaxing family time, kind of day.

Dios mio!...given the choices offered, it might TAKE a good stiff drink to get me the booth...of course, my team always comes in third-place anyway, and thatis a very sobering reality...

rapido! are you talking of soccer team or political party?

Seeing the options that everyone has during election day the last few elections, i think they should give out free cocktails when you go to your local precinct to place your vote. It would probally ease the pain nothing that you just voted for 4 more years of living hell!
