Fresno Mayor Alan Autry told his radio audience today that he's voting for Ashley Swearengin for mayor over Henry T. Perea. Autry said Swearengin is best equipped to move the city forward, and that's why she should succeed him as mayor.
Swearengin, who appeared on Autry's show on KYNO radio, said her campaign "just got a lot better" with Autry's statement that he's supporting her.
Autry's office released this statement from the mayor:
"The upcoming mayoral election could be one of the most important events in the history of our city. Fresno has made progress on many fronts over the last several years and it is critical for the next mayor to keep that positive momentum going. Ashley Swearingen has the vision, skills and determination to continue our forward march into the 21st century. That is why she has my vote on November 4th."
Perea's office issue this statement in response:
"It's inspiring to think that in our country every vote counts the same. That's true in Fresno whether it's the Mayor or any one person across our community. I respect the Mayor and I've enjoyed working with him for the last six years but it will take more than 50,000 votes to win this election and I'm confident that the majority of local Fresno residents share my vision for change with a safer city and better jobs."
Just sounds like vague partisan claptrap to me. You could apply that official statement to any candidate you already liked. Too bad Autry couldn't actually specify why she's a better candidate.
I'm sure the Ashley fos are delighted to have Alan's support. He remains the most popular political figure in town. However, it would have been more helpful if the announcement had been made a week or two earlier, given all the early voting.
I was just going through stack of last weeks papers searching for the obituary of a young man, instead I came across your comments about autry and his stand on prop 8, koodoos to autry taking a stand. He has a right to his opinion just like you do.May I add Many of us who call ourselves Christians, have been living in Sodom and Gomorrha for sometime now is this a surprise? we have been complacent to what is going on and now OH NO or children in school are going to hear about "alternative lifestyles" thats what they call it now.and we have no rights. As Christians we are to love the sinner and hate the sin.Matthew 10 the print in red pretty much says it.Thankyou making me mad.Now I'll go back to looking for a piece of someones life to read who I know is in a better place.Debra Hawn
