Mike Osegueda posed that question to me because, well, I'm so darned old, and he has not seen as many Fresno sunsets as these old eyes have. This is Mike's take on the question from today's post on the beehive blog.
But back to the issue at hand. The Wisconsin game is huge, but only if the Bulldogs win on Saturday. If they lose, it's time to talk about jail overcrowding, law enforcement consolidation and reviving the mayor's downtown lake. And if the Bulldogs win? Oh, my. Fresno will be on the road to the big time, and we'll all be basking in the national spotlight.
So here's my view of the enormity of Saturday's tussle with the Badgers from the second-place cheese state:
The Big 10 will be in the house and that's something right there. Quite simply, this game looms larger than anything I've seen hereabouts -- bigger than the Save Mart Center opening with Andrea Bocelli, bigger than Alan Autry bringing celebrity to the mayor's office, bigger than getting Highway 41 completed all the way to the river, bigger than the Rolling Stones trashing the Holiday Inn at Ashlan and Highway 99 in '64, bigger than Krispy Kreme opening and closing.
Jim,
...remember the promising home opener against Oregon State, then the dismal performance at Auburn the following week, about 12 years ago? Does that qualify as a big deal, or are you just including home games?
Then there's that little College World Series thing.
I think closing 4 Starbuck's might be bigger than the Fresno's storied Krispy Kreme chapter.
Also, if you think the Stones were bad in '64, you should've seen what the Wiggles did in '03!
Just kidding about the Wiggles; it's good to see Fresno getting some positive press.
The close game at USC was the biggest. If we had one that one it would have been gigantic. The close loss took the wind out of our sales for a year...now, that's a big game. We could still recover nicely from this one by winning the conference.
Yes...it'll be big. The Dogs better button up, because it's going to be a war. And Wisconsin may not take them seriously.
I wish them good luck but it is so not the biggest news albeit better that it isn't one of the players gettiong arrested for something.
Meantime, a sausage scofflaw is released on a misdeweiner.
GO DOGS!!!
...when we all know it was Balognious Assault! But will
Sheriff Mims disclose that? Nooooooooo!
Did anyone check to see if there were any gang links before hauling the wiener-snatcher off in the patty wagon to grill him at the police station?
And what can we as a society do about this problem? If we outlaw sausages, only outlaws will have sausages!
Curious that you should bring that up, Mike. Smatter-of-fact, grog and grub spots in London started advertising "gang bangers"...but Scotland Yard quickly put the kielbasa on the idea.
This thread is dead.
I mean...let's be frank.
It is Thursday night before the "BIG GAME" and the Shaw and Cedar intersection is still a one lane mess. Should be interesting Saturday night.
"So is the Wisconsin football game the biggest thing Fresno has ever seen?"
Jim, Jim, Jim,
What about the Fresno State Baseball National Champions?
I thought that was pretty darn big, or am I off on this?
I guess it remains to be seen on your question.
The baseball championship was big, certainly. But technically it didn't happen in Fresno, so maybe it doesn't count in this poll.
It's technically not a poll either.
