"Can you believe there's not a law . . .?"
A visitor to The Bee's editorial board recently keeps a list like this for his own amusement to catalog legislative oversights. I would add the Hubbard Act to that list. Read our editorial advocating its passage by clicking here.
Can you believe there's not a law protecting the salaries and benefits of 'sole survivors' serving in the military? There is not, and if it hadn't been for local people fighting on behalf of Jason Hubbard, he would have been slapped with penalties for leaving the military six months early because two of his brothers were killed in the service of our country.
Fortunately, the Congress sees the negligence in such a policy and the House has moved forward with overwhelming support to correct that injustice. The Senate now must vote and then President Bush needs to sign off. Of course, they should do that as soon as possible.

This injustice must be corrected on the federal level so they better all grow up enough to get this through and quickly. I think anyone that votes against it should be on the next plane to Iraq with their kevlar equipment to experience what the soldiers go through.
When my husband did not want to reenlist, he got an early discharge. He lost none of the veteran benefits available to those who served during the Korean conflict.
When did they start to charge a penalty for an early discharge? And why? I am glad that it is going to changed.
Isabel-my thanks and gratitude to you and your husband in regards to the sacrifice you made for our country. Jackie-your righteous indignation is amusing...have you written your congress person? That's what I thought.
Of course I have written to my congress person Brian so I guess thats what you get for thinking. They just want to sit on their butt and collect the big bucks.
Have you written about the topic above or are you making it up?The blog just came out yesterday morning.Who did you write to and when? That's what I thought.
Brian once again thats what you get for thinking and talk about someone thinking they are rightous. This actually came out after he was discharged even though it just came into play in the legislature. I have written the Governor and the President even though I am sure they didn't read it, not that it is any of your business so get off your mighty high horse.
Since 2003, 43,000 soldiers have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan after the D.O.D. found them to be "medically non-deployable." Laws are for people that need laws,...what our government needs is cannon fodder. I blame Rush Limbaugh for the Hubbard family tragedy. Those poor people thought they were putting their lives on the line as an act of patriotism. Brian, I've written enough letters to Congress to understand that they have no interest in public opinion. They are money-raising machines.
Amen to you Swift. I was actually told that they don't even read the letters.
Brian you shouldn't be trying to do something for which you are not fully equipped ie Thinking
You said your congress person Jackie.Which is it? Your credibility has always been my issue. I don't believe you.Have fun in Palm Springs.
Brian I dont care if you think I am credible because my life, beliefs and actions don't revolve around you.
