Red alert: Heart disease is No. 1 killer of women we love

I'm wearing my bright red blazer today, thanks to my husband, who reminded me this morning that it's National Wear Red Day in the "Go Red for Women" campaign sponsored by the American Heart Association.

During February, National Heart Month, we are reminded that heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are the No. 1 killer of American women. Like most families, heart disease runs rampant through the men in my family, so we watch them like hawks. But we women, hmmm not so much.
Apparently, that's a common misconception and we women need to be monitoring our own heart health much more carefully. Click here to see the national Web site.

On the local Web site is the story of Tonya Henderson-Meyers, a mother of four, pediatrician and heart disease survivor. At the age of 35, she discovered her aortic valve needed to be replaced. Click here to see her story.

We women also tend to ignore the symptoms of heart attack -- but here is a reminder of when to call 911:

* Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. * Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. * Shortness of breath. Often comes along with chest discomfort. But it also can occur before chest discomfort. * Other symptoms. May include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness. Learn the signs – but also remember: Even if you're not sure it's a heart attack, you should still have it checked out. Fast action can save lives-maybe your own.

I believe that most people that get checked out with early symproms find that there is a problem that needs to be fixed and can do so before the big attack comes. I call these second chances from God.

Heart disease, respiratory, asthma is linked to raw sewage. Isn't it time the truth is exposed?
