With all the bawdy behavior going on during the space flights, it's high time there was a teacher assigned to chaperone this field trip. If all goes as planned, next Tuesday, former Fresnan Barbara Morgan will be the Teacher in Space aboard the shuttle Endeavour on a construction mission to the international space station. She'll see to it that no one's blasted on this flight. An MSNBC story with video on her is posted here.
A graduate of Hoover High School, Morgan now lives in McCall, Idaho, and she is very humble. The story says "Christa was, is, and always will be our 'Teacher in Space,' our first teacher to fly," Morgan said in a NASA interview, adding that showing schoolchildren how adults recover from tragedies such as the Challenger and Columbia accidents has kept her committed to human spaceflight."
That is a very gracious statement, but Morgan is very accurately going to be the first teacher in space because the Challenger exploded before it reached outer space. A story in today's Boston Globe praises Barbara Morgan's persistence and perseverance. She has remained prepared for 22 years for this life-altering opportunity.
