I just love it when the baseball season is upon us and my beloved St. Louis Cardinals -- that's the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals -- are about to take on the National League once again.
I just hate it when I wake up to the news that the Cardinals' manager, Tony La Russa, was arrested and charged with drunken driving in Florida overnight. Police said La Russa was asleep at the wheel, waiting through two cycles of traffic lights and with his motor running, when they spotted him and made the arrest. Sheesh.
hate the preening, self indulgent, whining, milionaires who play{and manage} the game....love how the dawn of the new season makes me feel like a boy again!
Love: taking in a Grizzlies game on a pleasant summer evening - watching baseball doesn't get much better than that.
Hate: seeing the home team lose nearly every time I go.
Hate-the waiting between the World Series and spring training.Love-the memories of Cardinal baseball in the sixties as a boy and spring training trips to Arizona with the Padres.Good times.
At this time of year, one week before Opening Day, there's nothing to hate. Everything is fresh possibility and the playing field is equal and untarnished. We'll get to see Hammerin' Hank's record fall this year, and we'll boo as we give Barry a standing O and take his picture (and fight over the ball), and we'll get to see some promising young player bloom to fruition. There will be new names - players we've never heard of - achieving spectacular feats. We'll get to watch the Yankees and their big fat payroll tank once again, and maybe this will be the Cubbies' year. Me, I'm pulling for the team from Beantown, but I'm just happy to hear Jon and Flem and Kruk and Kuip on the radio again. It's my favorite time of the year.
