Will Perea or Waterston do it first?

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich has been calling himself the mayor of Los Angeles County because the title of supervisor or board chairman isn't good enough. This is how the Los Angeles Daily News once described it: "He's begun changing the lettering on his office door, and has ordered new stationery and business cards saying he's the mayor. It is a post that Antonovich held briefly after the Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 vote in October 1996 to rename the chairman of the board as mayor of the county."

So the question now is who will be the first member of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors to propose changing the title of board chairman to mayor. I would bet on Supervisor Henry Perea or Supervisor Bob Waterston. I'm leaning toward Waterston.

Just wait until Fresno Mayor Alan Autry hears that Waterston might call himself Fresno County Mayor Bob Waterston.

Being a fan of Waterston's somewhat.. just thinking it's better than some other things he's been called..

I'm sure that giving anyone a "title" will BE the billion dollar egg laying golden goose answer to the County's budget woes. It goes right up there with the periodical ideas like forming a million dollar salary committee to find out why the County purses are empty.

As to calling oneself Lord Master of the realm, it MAY help. You don't know unless you try it right? Does anyone know if you get additional benefits or grants if you HAVE a "Mayor" in place? Maybe double coupon day at Wild Water Adventure Park?

I think we have gotten more and more away from the idea of public service. All of the Biblical admonitions of "The least will be first," etc. are forgotten as well as just plain modesty. I am so tired of public officials aggrandizing themselves not only with titles, but the perks of office. Free private jet travel, free tickets, etc. Can we ever just worry about doing the job brilliantly for the public welfare?

In agreement. I believe keeping the public happy would be their first concern and not the lettering on their door or business card.

In reading that all I could think of while laughing, was Mel Brooks in Blazing Saddles as the Governor saying "We have to protect our phony baloney jobs Gentlemen.. more harrumphing!!"

Maybe we could just get them all embroidered jackets that say "BOS Rules!" and then they'll be happy spend time in solving the County's problems.
