arrowKings River snowpack far below average

The snowpack above the Kings River is puny, but farm water officials are still holding out hope for storms to ease the dry conditions.

Surveyors this week took a look and discovered water content was 25% of what they would expect to see on April 1.

Kings River Watermaster Steve Haugen said: "If this were a normal year, our snowpack right now should be at 65% of the April 1 average."

Haugen said if the season produces average rain and snow over the next two months, there's still time to get the snowpack up to 65% to 70% of average.

The Kings data will be used by the California Department of Water Resources to predict the runoff this spring and summer. The prediction should be made some time this month.
