Daughter of legendary Mexican artist to visit Fresno State
Guadalupe Rivera Marín, the daughter of celebrated Mexican artist Diego Rivera, will stop by Fresno State on Thursday to offer an intimate look at her childhood in Mexico and growing up with a larger-than-life father.
Rivera Marín is the legacy of her father, who was a revolutionary in art and politics. Rivera (1886-1957) made his career in Mexico, both through his explosive murals and his leadership of the Mexican Communist Party. He was revered by many and the enemy of others, but many would agree his paintings were unrivaled.
He was married to Frida Kahlo, a celebrated and troubled artist whose paintings have made their own mark in history. Their marriage was tumultuous, and Kahlo once called marrying Rivera one of her life's "big accidents."
Rivera Marín will share her children's book "My Papá Diego and Me: Memories of My Father and His Art," family portraits and reproductions of her father's art.
The free public event starts at 7 p.m. at the Satellite Student Union on the Fresno State campus. It is part of the university's Center for Creativity and the Arts' year-long series examining immigration, migration and labor through art.
