arrowNew bike shop calls Sunnyside home

Here's a sneak preview of what's appearing in Monday's Word on the Street column. More new businesses will appear in the Monday edition of the newspaper.

The owners of the new Sunnyside Bicycles ride their bikes to the store every day.

John and Vanessa McCracken live about a mile away from their store at the southeast corner of Kings Canyon Road and Fowler Avenue, which opened last Monday.

The couple owned the Madera Bike Shop for eight years, but sold it to open a store closer to their home in the Sunnyside neighborhood.

The store joins other bike shops in Fresno like Steven's Bicycles and Tri-Sport Bicycles, but its goal of serving the southeast Fresno area sets it apart, Vanessa McCracken said.

"Our goal is just to serve the neighborhood," Vanessa McCracken said. "I think it's been neglected."

The store is one of the first to open in the Sunnyside Marketplace shopping center, near the GB3 gym.

It can serve hard-core biking enthusiasts, but focuses mostly on providing families with bikes they need to enjoy an afternoon ride. The store is full of bikes, like bright orange beach cruisers, commuter bikes, mountain bikes and adult, three-wheeled "trikes."

A kids buy-back program allows customers to put the price of the certain children's bikes purchased at the store toward a new one when the child outgrows it. The used bikes are donated to kids in need.

All three employees -- the McCrackens and mechanic Jacob Maggiore -- are certified to repair and work on bikes.

Thank you for being one spoke of Sunnyside's wheel. I was a member of that community for several years, and seeing you have a presence there brings a smile. Hang on, Sunnyside. Your in for the ride of your lives.
