Historic restaurant for sale
The historic Sherwood Inn restaurant east of Sanger - vacant for more than two years - is for sale.
Members of the Hansen family recently regained control of the the converted schoolhouse, spruced it up and have put it up for sale at what listing agents Jason Andrade and Sam Bogdanovich of Commercial Retail Associates say is a "bargain" price of $499,000.
The deal includes almost three acres of land and a 7,248-square-foot turn-key restaurant.
The eatery was a popular brunch stop along the Blossom Trail. The atmosphere was casual dress in a 1890 school with booths reminiscent of an old railroad car. The dining room was in a small auditorium with the stage still intact.
Popular menu items included seafood dishes of crayfish and mussels. The prime rib and poaches salmon also were popular.
It dates to 1890, when rancher M.M. Jack helped form a local school district because he had three children approaching school age.
The school closed in 1958 when the district consolidated with Centerville's. In 1972, it became a restaurant.
Patrons over the years have brought in their class pictures and put them on the wall. They get signed as people come in to eat.
The for-sale sign is generating many calls, although none have resulted in a purchase offer, Bogdanovich said. "I get calls from all over," he said. "It's surprising how many people call from that sign in the country."
