arrowParra-Florez is officially on

Pete Parra, the father of former Assembly Member Nicole Parra, said Tuesday that he's going to challenge Sen. Dean Florez's mother, Fran, for a South Valley Assembly seat.

The Democratic primary match-up in June will pit two families that have feuded for years. Parra's intentions also signal that Republican incumbent Danny Gilmore probably is not running again.

Gilmore beat Fran Florez for the seat in 2008, but issued a statement last week indicating he is leaning against seeking a second term. Pete and Nicole Parra are allies of Gilmore.

Pete Parra, a former Kern County supervisor, promised he would not run an "anti-Florez" campaign. "I'm going to run on people's issues and what's important to the 30th District."

Fran Florez also downplayed the feud. "I've known Pete for a number of years. He and I have never had any issues."

The 30th District covers Kings County and parts of Fresno, Tulare and Kern counties.

GOP strategist Kevin Spillane said Republicans are "talking to a wide and diverse number" of candidates to run in place of Gilmore, in the event that he leaves.

Tony Quinn, who analyzes legislative races, said the GOP has a shot to keep the seat, especially if the Parra-Florez race turns ugly, weakening the winning candidate in the general election.

"There's a lot of bitterness down there," he said. "A big nasty fight ... makes it possible for a Republican to win that seat."

The Parra-Florez feud was rekindled last year when Nicole Parra, who served as a Democrat in the Assembly, endorsed Gilmore in his race against Fran Florez. Several years ago, Dean Florez ran one of his staffers against Pete Parra in a Kern County supervisor's race. Parra, the longtime incumbent, lost.
